Deval Patrick said Friday that President Barack Obama had personally talked to him about changing the Senate succession law in Massachusetts, and White House aides were pushing for him to gain the power to temporarily replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy amid the administration's health care push.

A month after a White House spokesman labeled the issue a state matter, Patrick said he and Obama spoke about changing the law as they both attended Kennedy's funeral in Boston last month. He also said White House aides have been in contact frequently ever since and pushing for the change so they can regain their filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

"He and his whole team have been very clear about that," Patrick told reporters after holding a Cabinet meeting near his Berkshire Mountains vacation home. ...

ALBANY, N.Y. - National Democratic Party leaders have asked Gov. David Paterson to consider withdrawing from the 2010 governor's race, according to two senior New York Democratic advisers.

Both advisers, who are close to the governor, spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for Paterson. The sources said it was unclear what Paterson would do in response.

The New York Times, which originally reported the request on its Web site, said that it was President Barack Obama who asked Paterson to withdraw.

The New York Times quoted a senior Obama administration official as saying that the proposal that Paterson be asked to step aside came from a White House political adviser but was approved by the president.

“Is there concern about the situation in New York? Absolutely,” The Times quoted a second Obama administration official as saying.

(I posted this in politics so perhaps we could have a merge)  It is an interesting development so soon after Patterson suspended ACORN's contracts. Obama is interefering big time in Massachusetts also:  see here

Patrick knows this is a killer issue on his reelection bid (not that there isn't enough things to do him in).  I am sure he isn't an enthusiastic player in this.

His reelection bid is already dead, unless a bunch of people enter the race to divide the anti-Patrick vote - the most favorable polls have him at about 39% approval. I think this is a last ditch effort to impress Obama enough to gain a position in the administration.

But he'll play along for a shot at a post in Zero's administration.  Problem is, we all know that, and we'll expose it for the pay-for-play politics it is.

Gotta love it. The knuckleheads on the left changed the law so if Kerry won that the repuke governor didn't have the power to replace him. Now it's biting them in the ass.  :lmao:
