Henry Gibson, cast mate of ’Laugh-In’ dies

Henry Gibson died this past Monday from his brief battle with cancer, he was 73 and passed away at his home in Malibu.

Gibson made it big in 1968 when he was an original cast member on ‘Laugh In’. The Comedy sketch show was on NBC. He was known for one of his sketches in which he held up a big flower and recited a poem of his. He always began the poem with which would become his signature line, “A Poem, By Henry Gibson.”

According to Reuters.com, “the poems proved so popular that they led to the release of two comedy albums, "The Alligator" and "The Grass Menagerie," as well as a book, "A Flower Child's Garden of Verses."

He went on to act in films, he was in four Robert Altman films, one being ‘The Long Goodbye’ in 1973. In recent years he was in the box office smash ‘Wedding Crashers’ playing a priest.

In television he recently played a crusty judge for five seasons on the ABC show ‘Boston Legal’. As reported on

TheAssociatedPress.com, “after serving in the Air Force and studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Gibson — born James Bateman in Germantown, Pa., in 1935 — created his Henry Gibson comic persona, a pun on playwright Henrik Ibsen's name, while working as a theater actor in New York.”

Some might consider it in bad taste, but I get the feeling even Henry might get a chuckle.  It's certainly ironic:
