President Obama chose a Labor Day union picnic on Monday as the backdrop to announce his selection of Ron Bloom, a member of his auto industry task force, as senior counselor for manufacturing policy. Bloom planned to travel to Cincinnati with Obama for an afternoon announcement at the AFL-CIO event.

The announcement follows the weekend resignation of Van Jones, the White House "green jobs czar" who had come under fire in recent weeks for past inflammatory statements, including one where he called Republicans "assholes," and his signature on a petition suggesting that the U.S. government played a role in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman for the Bush administration, told FOX News that presidents like to appoint czars because it can be hard to get political appointees confirmed by an increasingly partisan Congress.

"They have skirted around that process so there is no accountability for the czars," she said Monday. "Nobody has to go up and testify in front of Congress. They don't have to go through the process."

Huh?  Remind me again who controls the House and the Senate.  Haven't Democrats have been telling us for the last nine months how irrelevant we are?

He's thumbing his nose at his Congressional critics.  And he wants to work with the Blue Dogs and Republicans . . . ?

The Democrats have how many seats in the U.S. Senate?

And Bo still doesn't think he can get them confirmed?

What's up with that?

Obama's New Manufacturing Czar Is "Labor's Man"
Posted by Kevin
Published: September 7, 2009 - 1:45 AM
Van Jones, President Obama's "green czar" may be gone, but team Obama isn't standing pat. They've announced their new "manufacturing czar" Ron Bloom, an investment banker and AFL-CIO money guy. If lack of actual manufacturing experience was a prerequisite then it appears they've got their man.

Before being promoted to the new "manufacturing czar" position Bloom was in charge of the auto bailout.

So the auto bailout was a debacle, certainly they'll do much better with manufacturing, right? Surely your confidence will be bolstered by the fact that manufacturing policy in the United States will be set by "labor's man," right?

What could possibly go wrong?

He's being in-your-face about all these czars. Yes, other American presidents had czars, but not dozens of them, nor any Troofers.

Was that a direct quote from Dana? She did used to work for Bush . . .

If these people went before Congress.....their "private" lives would be examined and made "public" as each committee has both Dems and Reps on them....and whether the Dems forced/hid the issue of examining each person's background or not...the Republicans would force each background to be thoroughly examined and made public.

Van Jones never would have made it past committee.....probably more of these 'czars" wouldn't than would.

Rather than risk those he wants in his Cabinet....Obama just doesn't appoint the Cabinet position and creates several Czar positions that together make up one Cabinet position. (did that make sense?)

What concerns me just as much as the unknown backgrounds of these individuals....is .....just how much are they being paid?

I seem to remember learning in school that Cabinet positions had specific salaries....just as Congress members do.

So ...I also wonder if there is any regulation or oversight on these salaries.....have not seen anywhere what they are being paid....and I seriously doubt they are working for free!
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

One of the pundits I heard today actually had a good point about the czars, which is that a big driver for Obama appointing so many of them is that each represents not just a function (which mostly are really the province of one or more Cabinet officers, which makes their legal foundation questionable when used so massively) but also a special interest group to which he is beholden, and the czar is a way of telling them they still have his ear.  Yes, I know, that does nothing to improve their legality, but it does go a long way to explain their untoward proliferation in realpolitik terms.

Glenn Beck said something today that the proliferation of czars means that government "for the people" has become government "for the special interests."

One of my soldiers got to go to the WH and meet Dana Perrino during his BNCOC class.

Let's just say she'd fit in real well here.

Funny how we didn't get to do the same thing this year when I was in Phase II BNCOC.

I can't imagine why?  :whatever:

Well it might explain why the WH requested one of my NCO's to announce at the Memorial Day wreath instead of me.
