Mercury leaks found as new bulbs break

Energy benefits of fluorescents may outweigh risk

 By Beth Daley
Globe Staff / February 26, 2008

Compact fluorescent lamps - those spiral, energy-efficient bulbs popular as a device to combat global warming - can pose a small risk of mercury poisoning to infants, young children, and pregnant women if they break, two reports concluded yesterday.

But the reports, issued by the state of Maine and the Vermont-based Mercury Policy Project, urged homeowners to keep using compact fluorescents because their energy-saving benefits far outweigh the risk posed by mercury released from a broken lamp.

They said most danger could be avoided if people exercised common-sense caution, such as not using compact fluorescents in table lamps that could be knocked over by children or pets and properly cleaning up broken bulbs.

The US Environmental Protection Agency and the states of Massachusetts and Vermont said yesterday that, based on the Maine study, they are revising their recommendations for where to use compact fluorescents in a home and how to clean up when one breaks.

"Using compact fluorescent bulbs is still the brightest idea out there," said Michael Bender, director of the Mercury Policy Project, a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate mercury use. "The message is: People should not be afraid but informed and prepared and learn how to dispose of them properly."

This is ridiculous. So when this is mandated that everybody have these light bulbs that look like Rotini pasta, we gotta place instructions on how to clean it up when the bulbs break in every room?

Well, at least the globalists can be ensured that this will reduce our "carbon footprint". And hey, if our kids or pets die because of the mercury, no carbon footprint! YAY!  :whatever:  :banghead:

WTF is a small  risk?  How many birth defects or poisonings constitute a small  risk?  Personally I'm not willing for my DIL (pregnant now) or my grandchildren to be exposed to ANY needless risk!  Mercury is shiny and therefore very alluring to young children who will put anything in their mouths!

I'd love to run a spiral mercury filled light bulb up whichever moonbat enviro-weenie came up with this idea.   :bird:

Start stocking up on regular bulbs now and you can corner the blackmarket in 2015.  I just switched half of our bulbs back to regular because I was sick of having to use 6 fl. bulbs to light one room.  I can now use one regular bulb to light the same area.

Cross reference this with...

Here in Northern Colorado they wanted a local funeral home director to install a $500,000 air scrubber over the stacks of his crematory b/c the local hippies are scared the mercury in the fillings in dead people's teeth will pollute the air.

Of course I wondered how much mercury could possibly be present AND harmful as it is obviously used in teeth fillings without ill-effect.

His other alternative was to pull teeth from the dead.

This all being said why is it the hippy-crites want to pull teeth from the dead but they are completely content to shove compact flourescents down our throats?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Because they are complete loons.
