Military Service

Just wondering. Don't want to put this in the military section because, normally, people not affiliated don't check that section.

Actually, the NAVY has THREE parts. Surface, aka skimmers; submarines, bubbleheads; and Naval Aviation, commonly referred to as "Airedales".

Army.

Did a lot of neat things, wouldn't have traded that experience for anything.

Served as a cook for 2.5 years (first enlistment), then the rest of my 20+ year active duty career as a musician.

But along with the music (playing and conducting), I got to play in logistics (supply), administration, training, drove wheeled vehicles of various types, and was an MOS-qualified linguist (German).

As many of you may know, I still continue my music; indeed, I can't not play for very long without getting antsy. Mrs. E can testify to that, though I'd be the first to say she has more musical talent in her little toe than I have in my entire body.

Navy--bubblehead AND a nuke.  So go ahead and bitch all you want about how much Pro-Pay, SRB, etc, I got.  I earned every damned dime of it with the BS I had to put up with.  Then again, I wouldn't have the job I do today without it.

Why does the Navy let Marines on their ships?

Sheep are too obvious.

Couldn't have been any worse than what they did with the AT rating the last few years of my Navy career.

23 years 11B imfantry

7 years  7 months active duty

15 years+ in the National Guard

Air Assault school

Jungle School

Sniper School

Unit Armorers School

I wouldn't trade it for anything but there are a bit more then a few things I would have done different. Spent two tours over seas one in Italy standing guard on Nuclear warheads attached to Nike Hercules Missiles and travelling around the world to train with the 101st Airborne had to be the best.

Couldn't have been any worse than what they did with the AT rating the last few years of my Navy career.

Actually, considering what Billy Jeff did to the advancement as a whole, I probably would have retired an E-6 had I stayed in.  I made it in just over 6 years, did the 3 years TIR required to take the CPO exam.  Was board eligible each of the three years I took the test before I got out--but with under 11 years, I would have been an "early selectee", meaning no more than 10 percent of the CPO selectees could be from my group.

Each year had about 200 board-eligible.  Back in the day before I took the CPO exam, they used to rate around 60 Chiefs.  My first year, 28.  My second, 12.  My third, 8.  Not only would I have to have been the #1 ranked E-6 at my command and SOY, I also would have had to have had Prototype or NPS instructor experience (none of which I had).  The writing was on the wall.

Ah yes, the dread PNA (pass not advanced).  I knew people who got out and joined another branch to make rate in the early seventies.

Army. 8 years.

Satellite/Microwave communications systems.

Did my last 17 months as operations NCOIC for a rapid deployment satellite company that reported directly to FORSCOM.

I was a mere E-5.

PNA never applied to the Chief's Test/ Board. Either one passed the Chief's Test and went to the board or not.

I'm a "no."  I would have never made it through Basic...and they probably wouldn't have taken me, given the number of times asthma put me in the hospital as a kid.

My Dad was Army, but only one tour.  My first husband was Air Force, and my oldest son did a tour in the Army.  I lost one uncle and at least one great-uncle in WW2.

One of my best friends is a Drill Sergeant at Knox, heading to Polk right now, had extreme asthma when he was younger. He's an 11B and was a section sergeant on a Stryker in Iraq with the 1-25th. Anyone that has me as a friend on facebook, he's the tattooed dude name Brad.
