A simple question for the American people?
Where do you think we would be today if we had not gone through the last eight years of George W Bush and the Republican Party rule?
Would we be wringing our hands about the huge debt? After all, George W Bush inherited a huge surplus, predicted to be trillions of dollars at this time in the future. But, he convinced us that this money belonged to the people, not the government? And he was right, wasn't he?
We would not have put two wars and a huge Medicare program on the credit card. We would not have doubled the national debt. Many believe we would not have been involved in a "war on terror"?
What condition would our nation be in today if not for the Republicans and George W Bush?? Think about that seriously. Think of the damage these folks have done to our nation. And they want you to put them back in charge.
Oh, I dunno. I suspect that if Alphonse Capote Gore had succeeded in stealing Florida, we'd be speaking Arabic today, among other things.

I think the problems with credit, housing (overbuilding both in numbers and size), and probably the auto industry would have happened under President Gore. I doubt that we'd be seeing a health care reform debate, but I also think that there would have been substantial regulatory reform of the insurance industry over the missing years so we wouldn't be in the sinking ship we now enjoy. North Korea would not have been a problem because Clinton's deal for fuel oil in trade for shut down reactors would have continued. Of course (I hope) we wouldn't have the Patriot Act - and that alone would be a wonderful thing, but I think we'd still be wire-tapped illegally.
Science would have a higher place, education would have been reformed. Global warming and attendant earth-care concerns would be getting a lot more press. Strangely enough I think the Republican Party would be both stronger than it is now but also more sensible in that the real wing-nuts would never have emerged let alone taken control of the Party.

3. Perhaps..
I think some regulations would have been kept under the Democrats and not simply thrown to the wind. There would have been somewhat more discipline in the markets. Although it would have been bad when the bubble burst, it would not have been as catastrophic or as expensive as it has been, in my opinion.

4. true, but a lot of the deregulations may not have happened or at least not as badly. I'm thinking specifically of the energy policy and the Enron debacle, both of which lead to other problems.
I do agree that some of these things have been years in the making, but I think the GOP's "let it burn to show how inefficient it is" attitude made things far worse.
Oh, I dunno.
