Not too sure how accurate the basic story in this thread really is.  There is an FY10 military pay increase in both House and Senate, not the same amount though that will be resolved in reconciliation.

Allot of folks to my surprise sell homes buy big trucks and travel trailers and just roam about the country----Gas, food and a map of truck stops to park the night will do it.

How to pay for all this, sell your home, take the equity and for $90,000  and one or 2 SS. checks a month you are a true Gypsy,  visit the kids 2-3 times a year the rest of the year you are free to  be a Roamer about this huge country.

My parents sold the house, bought a nice RV and travelled full time for five years. They owned lots in a resort in MS, and time share campground memberships all over the place. My dad at least had five pretty peaceful years of retirement before his early passing

The last RV was pretty top of the line, it cost more then the house sold for with an MSRP of 250k.....my mom sold the big RV, we took a major loss as that was right when fuel hit five bucks a gallon, but it was too much for her...and my dad fell off a ladder when waxing it, causing his death....it simply had to go. She bought a nice brand new RV trailer and it's been used both in Nevada & IL....now it's here full time in Nevada and she loves living in it...as I don't blame her, she lives in a very nice RV resort.

Very smart parents  and good to be around parents Rob.

I bet those last 5 years were the most fun and a dream come true for your Dad. bless him.

I bet your Mom had some really funny storeys to tell her grandkids,

For some the predictable life of growing old around friends and family same oh-same oh is stress free.   These are the people I feel die young---75-85.  The sligest deviation in life causes stress that kills them.

On the road\ there is always stress, so one learns how to handle the problems in life.   The brain is kept active, the more new thing one has in their life the more the brain is forced to work overtime.   And all is inpersonal no worry you did something wrong, it just happend so handle it.

The most miserable people I know are those who sell out and move to be near family.

They expect to watch the grandbabys grow up to find they must now sacrifice their time and money to baby sit on demand or foot the bill for a $40,000 swimming pool----Its for the Kids----

These people cannot go anywhere on the spur of the moment for longer then 3 days without the guilt trip.

Just how much did YOUR grandparents do for you as a kid.    Were you left money, property or stocks when they departed.?

One of your parents passed on, did they leave you anything or did everything go to a step parent.     Very hard to see a step mother wearing you grandmothers jewelry or a step father wearing your dads tie clip.

Thing is when a child reaches maturity, they and only they are responsible for their lives.

People that have worked for 18 years or so and raised their kids can now STOP.

Life is short, people have but a few years left in work life and need to be finding ways to survive when their work days have ended.

Pack up, move, the kids now have to depend on their own Witt's to survive and feed their own kids.

Be surprised at what your kids can accomplish by themselves.Be surprised at how well the grandkids turn out without you there to defend them from themselves.

Even when they do raise the social security payments, other agencies such as housing assistance agencies that offer recipients benefits are there to suck the extra money up. Or, food card benefits go down if social security payments go up. There is no such thing as a good to honest increase in income for anyone on social security if they have other benefits that are affected. Oh, and for someone to receive Medicaid, they are limited to how much they can save up in their bank account before their Medicaid is terminated. So, recipients cannot do the wise thing and store up emergency funds, though Medicare and Medicaid do not always pay their medical and dental bills.

Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing assistance all need to be taken out of the hands of bureaucrats who just love making rules and stipulations for everything the government "gives" to people in need. And, if you need say a small amount of money as opposed to a monthly check the government will not help you. They will wait till you have nothing before they qualify you to receive anything, and then they have all kinds of rules to monitor and make sure that you remain dependent on government and don't go off and financially ween yourself off benefits. To come clean of government benefits without interruption to things like health care, you have to jump from being totally dependent to being totally independent between checks. Otherwise, you will spend time without benefits and without adequate funds to cover the cost of living.

Not all social security recipients are the elderly, many of them have disabilities and are put on social security when they have trouble keeping themselves in the workforce. It is advisable to avoid the sand trap of accepting government checks altogether if you can, because there is no financial strategy for getting off of benefits. Either they cut you too soon when you begin to make progress, or they decrease your benefits too much too fast. Been there and been in that mess on disability.

MediCaid is considered a loan. If you use it and you die, the govt has first dibs on your house for back payment. If you win the lotto, they will be there.

Hi FGL,

I am a conservative and I am a writer. I will have to check out your link.

You said, "MediCaid is considered a loan. If you use it and you die, the govt has first dibs on your house for back payment. If you win the lotto, they will be there."

You are right, but federal law under the 1993 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act only goes after the estates of those seeking long-term care from Medicaid, particularly by going into nursing homes. I found a very interesting article on it after reading your reply. It is here:

Medicaid collects at the grave

After reading the article I now know why they ask if you have any life insurance policy each year that you must reapply for Medicaid. Apparently, Medicaid only allows for one car, burial funds up to about $5,000, a wedding ring, some home furnishings, and a small life-insurance policy. I think Medicaid is a joke, but I was on it for several years. Even if they do have dibs on my estate and I don't know it, they can't really collect more than was paid for me while I was on it. Even though that may be substantial I seriously doubt it can even begin to put a dent in my current life insurance policy, but it does lead me to wonder why I can't just send the government a check to keep their grubby hands off of the inheritance I will leave behind.

And here is a link to a similar thread at The Dump.

Funny stuff but hardly worth a separate thread. (I realize some people here could care less about the dummy antics.)  :couch:

There are ways around all this hooey.

At 65 put the title to your home in a relatives name, also have a contract drawn up that you will pay that relative $5.00 a year to live there for life. The relative now becomes your landlord and is responsible for all up keep and maintenance on the home. If your furnace blows up and relative does not buy a new one, you do, and sue them in court for the expense.

Face it, when you turn 90 years old and have to pay to have the lawn mowed, bill the relative that now owns the property free and clear.

There are lots of things the old codgers can do to live a quality life.   Say you have only one kid that gets disappointed that your still breathing,   heck you can go into a nursing home for free and the kid has to work for their inheritance.

This is in no way underhanded, this is called working with the law for your benefit.

I oughta know--my father just bought my grandfather's house in Phoenix.

Vesta, you'll be lucky if the law doesn't work YOU over for welfare fraud, if you try that as written.  Without going into painful detail, anything from inheritance taxes to bankruptcy to entitlement programs has 'Look-back' provisions to treat any such sham transactions as if they didn't exist (and brand them fraud if the agency involved wants to play hardball and go for fines, penalties, etc.), the look-back may be three months, three years, or undefined (and hence unlimited), these little games are not for the unsophisticated.  As thundley indicates, if you try that example of paying $5 a month for rent on a place that has a real rental market value of $800 a month, the agency involved is going to treat that as $795 a month in undeclared income.  Those are just a couple of high points on how you can get into trouble 'Working the law for your benefit' if you don't actually have a ton of relevant legal expertise, there are quite a few more booby traps than those.

Um Vesta darlin, what does this have to do with social security decreaseing?
BTW  What you are advising sounds an awful lot like the f word, the one spelled fraud.   Then too putting your assets under the control of your neer do well  kids could result in a severe shock when the County Mountie comes to serve you the eviction notice so junior can sell the farm and skip off with Bambi the bartender babe to the South Sea Islands.  Kind of hard to bitch about it don't ya see 'cause you would have to admit to the f-word..

No, because you're still on the hook for the "income" you received from the bank.

Putting a house in a relative name creates a federal liability called gift tax. You can not give more than $10k per year to a relative or person. You can transfer that amount each year and a one time gift of $50k. Also, there is a 5 year lookback on medicaid. So, if you have made any financial transactions within  5 years the government will collect.

I would advise you to seek a tax professional before doing the things you describe

Seniors Angry Over No Social Security Increase

Aug 24, 2009 6:35 pm US/Eastern

<excerpt>

For the lunchtime crowd at the White Plains Senior Center, it was very unappetizing news.

"We work all our lives, and now they want to cut back on the little bit they give us? I don't think that's right," said Mercedes Leis.

Every year since 1975, social security recipients have received a cost of living adjustment, known as a COLA.

"Each year that we get that little raise, that's a big help to us seniors, it really is," said Joan Narracci.

Last January the COLA was 5.8 percent, boosting the average monthly retiree check to $1,153.
