Mexico Doubles Size Of Customs Inspection Force

Mexico has replaced all 700 of its customs inspectors with newly trained agents. Despite an anticipated longer wait time, some El Paosans welcome Mexico’s stepped-up efforts on border security. "Better technology and better educated is definitely a good thing,” said Margaret Neil of west/central El Paso.

As KFOX has reported, the drug war in Juarez has claimed thousands of lives, including innocent bystanders like 15-year-old Tania Lozoya, a Coronado high school student. "It's as critical as Iraq or Iran or anything that's going on in the Middle East,” said Tobin. “We’ve got a real problem here."

The Mexican government said the 1,400 new agents have gone through background checks, months of training and are better educated. The massive shakeup across the border is all part of an effort to root out corruption and improve vigilance at all Mexican ports

Another goal of the overhaul is to combat tax evasion. The tax administration spokesman said the former inspectors weren't fired; instead, the government didn't rehire them when their contracts expired.

Hopefully, they are serious and this isn't just window-dressing.  I have my doubts.

Probably more of a PR stunt.  I suspect the number of gringos crossing the border and spending $$$ has dropped off "a bit".  Maybe they'll build a wall on the south side of the river to keep us out now.

Been going on for years Thundley, When we dependents wanted to spend the day shopping over the boarder we were told in no uncertain terms to stay together.  There had been some incidents way back then, when a couple of Navy Captains wives had been charged with prostitution and held for ransome.
