President shifts focus to renting, not owning
Using $4.25b to build affordable housing
By Joseph Williams

Sending your articleYour article has been sent. Email| Print| Reprints| Yahoo! Buzz| ShareThisText size – + WASHINGTON - The Obama administration, in a major shift on housing policy, is abandoning George W. Bush’s vision of creating an “ownership society’’ and instead plans to pump $4.25 billion of economic stimulus money into creating tens of thousands of federally subsidized rental units in American cities.

The idea is to pay for the construction of low-rise rental apartment buildings and town houses, as well as the purchase of foreclosed homes that can be refurbished and rented to low- and moderate-income families at affordable rates.

........

“I’ve always said the American dream should be a home - not homeownership,’’ said Representative Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and one of the earliest critics of the Bush administration’s push to put mortgages in the hands of low- and moderate-income people.

But without a private home, how would Rep. Frank (Queer-MA) have run that homosexual escort service?

The Kenyan just remembers that back home, people were happy with mud huts, so what's wrong with the projects?

Yes I know folks have to rent so lets get that out of the way.

Renting gives one no equity either so it is a natural desire of DUmmies.

So all the low-cost apartments can become a little mini-ghetto?   They will just turn into more "projects" communities, and we all know how well THAT turned out.

Knowing the way Lord Zero thinks and that he hates white people, I'd look for him to build smaller apartment complexes , maybe multifamily duplexes and triplexes in mostly middle class to upscale neighborhoods.

This is the part where Comrade Zero forecloses on all of those FHA, VA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac etc. etc. sub-prime home mortgages that nobody can afford, because they're all gubmint property now.  The residents of those homes will be permitted to stay - and continue to pay their "mortgage", of course - because all that money will be going to Federal coffers instead of those greedy banks.

He's just following the model set forth by his philosophical idols of the Soviet Union....where home ownership of the common folks was nada and everyone lived in small gov't built apartments.

Since the Zero lives in "Government Housing" does that mean we can kick him out?

It was he and others who encouraged home ownership at any cost and now he's back-peddling. Because of his home ownership for all focus, particularly for minorities, we got into the subprime mess we did, but now it was all Bush's fault. What a pos this guy is!

"Chicken necks in every pot and 2 rooms for every family." ....Obama slogan for 2012.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

"Chicken necks in every pot and 2 rooms for every family." ....Obama slogan for 2012.

At my age that sound good to me, long as all utilities included, management mows the lawn plows the snow, and all we have to do is just clean out space,  Hope that includes our own bathroom.

Seriously, I have raised my kids, just me and hubby now, why are we paying all this money for a 3 bed room home when we don't use but kitchen, dinning room, bed room, living room and 2 baths >?

We don't need the family room, the 2 empty bedrooms. Taxes keep going up. we are becoming land poor.

Owning a home can be a money pit,  we will never be able to recoup the cost of repairs, may in fact have to take loss when we sell.

Those with family's, a home is a good investment sometimes, but when the nest is empty, time to look at options.

As a renter one can allways move if the neighborhood gets to wild for you, Furnance blows up, pipes leak not your problem.

For people with no kiddies around, renting is ideal, go off camping or vacation and the lawn will be mowed and a new roof to the building installed while you were gone.

Pride in ownership is OK for some folks, for me,-------All I want is a room some where far away from the cold night air, with one convenient chair, would it not be lovely.

There are thousands of houses sitting empty all over the country, due to foreclosure.

In the last week alone, I have done reports on an $800k, a $550K and 2 in the $350-400K range going to foreclosure, and just closed on a $250K Friday.

Now, depending on where you live...that might not seem like a lot. In my area...above $400K is getting into very very very nice housing. I'm talking granite counters, hardwood floors, high end cabinetry, master baths with whirlpool tubs and separate tile showers, 3 car garages.

What's going to happen to all these properties coming onto the market? Not just here, but all over the country?

There are not enough buyers in upper tier price ranging to buy the amount of houses on the market!

Is the government going to purchase these houses, and turn them into rentals?

Hey....some of them have 4, 5, 6 bedrooms...they can rent them out to illegals.... ::)

House is occupied...government's collecting money on it.

But what if YOU are the neighbor?

Do YOU want to stay in YOUR house?

Who's going to buy YOUR house?

Do YOU walk away from your investment?

It's already a slippery slope that the government's looking to turn into pure ice....
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

If the house is loan "underwater" then let it go, if income in an issue. If you are well above water, then you've pretty much got to ride it out. Around here 3 bedrooms to illegals earns from $2250 mo to $4500mo., TAX FREE CASH!

The dems would have the government take title to those houses, and then assign two or three urban families to each of those $400K - $500K homes.
That would be sure to create more vacant homes in the neighborhood, and pretty soon all those urban families who have destroyed downtown will be living in the 'burbs, 12 or 15 people per house. The Kenyan would love it.

You got me curious Peter. I went and checked the neighborhood I owned a home in Norfolk VA. about 30 years ago.

I sold the old Victorian for $60,000 20 years ago----Victorian meant no insulation, 2 bath 4 bed room attic, full cellar [ unusual for that neck of the woods] big front porch and small lot 50x100, garage and one block to the water front. Built in 1905.

Surprise, my old home that I raised my kids in for 10 years is now on the market again for-----Gasp----$299,000.00.

I found enough foreclosures and auction's in that area, Winona, to make me wonder what is up there.  Even Gent down town has some fantastic bargins, just a stones throw from one amazing city as it has changed so much I got lost 2 years ago  visiting friends.

Wonderful town, they brought in the bull dowsers and took half the city and ghettos out, built a whole new up scale area.

We have this one area outside out Navy Yard in Kittery that could benefit from some of that bulldozing and the far sightedness of Norfolk.

BTW, is the Duck Inn still in business out your way, best sea food I ever ate.

Several years ago...I was showing a 4-unit townhouse to a client. 2 were 2 br, 2 were 3br - bath and a half, galley kitchen and a living room.

A builder owned all 4 units.

We went in 2 of them, one of each br configuration.

Each br and held 2 or 3 mattresses on the floor. Clothes were neatly stacked on the floor by each mattress.

Place was neat as a pin. The kitchen however reeked of Mexican food, though all the dishes were washed and stacked in the sink or on the counter.

Found out later that the builder "rented" the places to his workers.

Yeah....I bet. I would venture that he "housed" them there, was worried about being reported and was moving them somewhere else.

This was back in the late 90's, when a couple of the builders - who built subdivisions- brought in Mexicans to do brick laying and roofing. They would start at dawn and work until dusk....7 days a week.
