A team of U.S. government officials considering options for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp is scheduled to visit Michigan Thursday to assess the possibility of using a state prison there to house war-on-terror prisoners.

Some local officials have proposed using the Standish state prison, which is slated for closure itself, to take prisoners that will have to leave Guantanamo soon if President Barack Obama is to meet a January 22, 2010 deadline to close the military-run facility.

“Federal officials will be conducting a site survey of the Standish prison facility tomorrow,” said one administration official who asked not to be named. “This visit is intended only to gather information about the facility. No decisions have been made about where to locate GTMO detainees, and multiple options are being considered.”

Wouldn't sending them to Michigan be considered cruel and unusual punishment? :-)

It would certainly qualify the guard detatchments for combat and hazardous duty pay.
