Airlines to Toughen Passenger Screening

Airlines to Toughen Passenger Screening

Airlines this week will begin requiring some people making reservations for domestic flights to submit their dates of birth and genders as part of a screening process aimed at keeping boarding passes out of the hands of suspected terrorists, the Transportation Security Administration said.

The agency said the screening would all play out behind the scenes, meaning there should be no additional delays for passengers at airport terminals. The change will be phased in starting Saturday. Not all airlines are fully participating yet and might not request the data.

*snip*

TSA officials have been criticized for refusing to allow passengers to board if their names were the same, or even similar, to those on the watch lists. Civil-liberties groups and privacy advocates have criticized the watch lists, saying they should be more narrowly focused on suspected terrorists. One government estimate put the number of names appearing on its lists at more than 700,000 two years ago.

I dunno, maybe this should have been done sooner.  We've heard about children being held up for boarding because their names just happened to match the name of someone on the "no-fly" list. OTOH, they could have included ages of people on the "No-fly" lists, or just used common sense to know that a child probably wasn't a terrorist.

Yeah, I agree, the current way the 'No-fly' list works is totally tits-up, I have to say this is a much-needed refinement.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I'll be thinking of you folks as I'm taxiing - unmolested - out of the GA terminal.  I am SOOOOOOO glad I got my ticket, lo, these many years ago.

A 'plane is a magic carpet, that allows me to bypass TSA gropings, short tempered, troll-like ticket and gate "agents", $10 bad coffee and stockyards style lines, "get out of jail free", and only have to deal with government drones if I'm filing IFR.   :-)

If it costs me a bit more than I'd otherwise spend flying commercial, to avoid having to keep my temper in check, the price is worth it.
