Mel Martinez to step down, letting Crist make pick

TALLAHASSEE — Sen. Mel Martinez told friends and supporters Friday in an e-mail that he'll step down from the Senate as soon as a replacement is appointed to fill out his term.

``My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country and at this stage in my life, and after nearly twelve years of public service in Florida and Washington, it's time I return to Florida and my family,'' said Martinez, who had already ruled out a run for re-election in 2010.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Gov. Charlie Crist, the leading Republican to replace Martinez in the U.S. Senate, will have the power to appoint someone to fill the remainder of Martinez's term.

Crist has denied that he'd appoint himself. He's expected to make an announcement on a fill-in before the end of the August recess when the Senate returns to Washington. Some names already surfacing: former Sen. Connie Mack, former Gov. Bob Martinez and former Secretary of State Jim Smith.

Hi,

I have blistered senator Martinez of late begging him to resign.  He is the one senator who could have had a major effect on stopping Sotomayer's nomination and he took the easy way out.  He appeared to me to have what we used to call in the marine corps a "short timer's" attitude.  He never spoke out on issues, even those where his past experience would have made him a credible contributor.

My feeling is Senator Martinez, "Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!"  He is doing the citizens of FL and the republican party a favor.

Now, as to his replacement, Connie Mack would be my first choice and I would beg him to run again.  Having met the man and have him spend well over an hour explaining to me the nuances of supply side economics, I was truly impressed, and yes he is a conservative.  On the other hand Crist spoke up in favor of the bail out bill which was a terrible thing in my opinion.  Crist scares me.
