Actually I have no desire for a smart car, a smart home, a smart doghouse, or any of that other stupid bullshit.  I just want stuff that works and does what it's supposed to do, in spite of electrical storms, water leaking in where an actuator motor or a chip might be, EMP, or any other possible fail mode.  As a matter of fact I find electric windows and door locks on cars to be an unnecessary and expensive-to-replace, failure-prone pain in the ass that I would rather do without.

I second that!  The car I drive is all manual everything, and I love it.

Jack Baruth did an interesting write-up on the death of the "cheap" car.  I've linked to it before, but I should probably put it in the Economics forum.  He blames consumer attitudes and outsourcing for the rise in car prices and amenities.

Why did power windows cost more than roll-up windows in 1973? It's easy to understand; it took a man, or a team of men, earning the aforementioned living wage, longer to build, assemble, and install power window components. In 2009, the whole deal is "subbed out" to a supplier who produces snap-in power window assemblies. It's usually cheaper to get 100,000 power window assemblies than it is to get 50,000 roll-up assemblies and 50,000 power assemblies, plus you don't have to train the $12/hour temps who (don't tell anyone!) actually do a lot of "low-skill" jobs on American assembly lines how to install two different kinds of window assemblies. The door can be made simpler because it doesn't have to accommodate two different kinds of controls, which leads to more volume discounts, and so on.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/accident/smallcar.asp  The picture is real! :o

Quote
...According to a reader who relayed information to us from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, the accident pictured above involved a Ford Escape, not (as is commonly reported) the smaller Smart Car.  The impact did not occur dead center as apparently shown in the photograph: it was offset to the right, and thus the driver's side was not nearly as heavily damaged...

And this is supposed to make me feel better about the Smart Car... how exactly?

If you crash it right....you'll look good at your funeral.

If I crash it right, they'll just bury my ass in that pop can, because they'll never get me out of it.  Either that, or they'll have Spongebob Squarepants on display in my casket, because that's the sponge they had to use to mop my ass off the highway with.

I had the opportunity to do a triple roll in one when the rear axles folded.  I was upside down and backwards before you could say Jack Robbinson.  However, it landed against a bank and rolled upright.  After reinstalling the battery and changing a tire I drove away (albeit at a much slower speed).  The same Corvair was later totaled by a roommate when a similar event occurred and it horseshoed itself around a cement lamp post.  The gas pouring in through the windshield allegedly put out the cigar my roomie was smoking.  :-)

Never being one to let fear and common sense stand in my way, after all that I would own two more, although one was only a parts car.  One great feature was the gas heater which would operate with the car off, great feature when parking in New England in the winter. :naughty:

I owned an MGA as my first car. Leaving Penna on the Turnpike into NJ one early morning, things fogged up. I slowed some, and was almost run over by a tractor trailer, so I sped back up, and dropped in behind it, as far back as I could and still see the tail lights, it was about 50 feet. As it was impossible to stop from 65 mph in 50 feet, and if I slowed down, I was sure to be run over , I followed hoping there was nothing large and stationary in front of us. The mental image of my car crushed and me dead in the wreckage was nerve wracking.

After about 30 miles, the air began to clear, and drenched in sweat , I could see and pulled around the truck. Sure enough, there was a line behind us.....and some in front.
Put over 100,000 miles on various MG's over the years, and never a wreck. I did, however, PAY ATTENTION more than in, say, a Cadillac!

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

I saw some retard driving one of those around my podunk little city today. No way would I want to attempt stuffing myself in something THAT tiny and without some very good protection. I'm safer on a bicycle.
