The tough talk from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers on Sunday capped a week that brought rare good news for the economy: The worst recession in the United States since World War II could be on the verge of ending. Even so, officials appeared willing to extend unemployment benefits.

Geithner and Summers both sidestepped questions on Obama's intentions about taxes. Geithner said the White House was not ready to rule out a tax hike to reduce the federal deficit; Summers said Obama's proposed health care overhaul needs funding from somewhere.

"There is a lot that can happen over time," Summers said, adding that the administration believes "it is never a good idea to absolutely rule things out, no matter what."

During his presidential campaign, Obama repeatedly pledged "you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime." But the simple reality remains that his ambitious overhaul of how Americans receive health care — promised without increasing the federal deficit — must be paid for.

"If we want an economy that's going to grow in the future, people have to understand we have to bring those deficits down. And it's going to be difficult, hard for us to do. And the path to that is through health care reform," Geithner said. "We're not at the point yet where we're going to make a judgment about what it's going to take."

I don't see a tax increase on the middle class going any where, at least not until the next midterm elections are over.  People are already upset over the Spendulous Waste bill, HealthScare, and a little over Cap and Tax, a tax increase would insure a Dimrat defeat.

Honestly I hope they do, it would virtually assure Congress changing hands in 2010, assuming the GOP had the sense to keep from going all 'Bi-partisan' (I.e. rolling over like a trained bitch for the Dems) and then had the guts to make a fight about it on the campaign trail.

You do have a good point but the cost is a little steep for me. Can't we do it with a fire sale  :fuelfire:
or a going out of business sale :-).

I'm with you. Apparently we need to bleed a little more before the point is made. It's painful, but I'm starting to think it's the only way.

Hey with the Dems in charge, the "Going out of business" sale is only a matter of when, not if.

Okay, so lemme see if I get this straight--Obumbles witholds LESS out of my check and calls it a "cut", even though my total tax liability at the end of the year hasn't changed one whit.  Next, the tax 2001-03 tax cuts expire after next year, which means my taxes go up to what they were before, but that's  NOT a tax increase?

Really?  In what bizarro world might that be taking place?

The liberal definition of a tax cut is a smaller increase than they originally demanded.
