Officers Run Background Check On Obama; Placed On Leave

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two DeKalb County police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave after an investigation revealed they ran a background check on President Barack Obama.
A representative for the DeKalb County CEO’s office identified the officers as Ryan White and C.M. Route.
Officials said Obama’s name was typed into a computer inside a DeKalb County police car on July 20 and ran through the National Crime Information Center.
The secret service was immediately notified and contacted the DeKalb County Police Department.

Sooooo, what did they find?  :naughty:

Who would turn them in and why would the SS be involved ?  Just seems like a case of "if you have nothing to hide....", but I guess his SSN would be on the background check and other personal info?

Warrantless Wire Tapping never bothered me .... nothing to hide  :-*

Sorry.  I can't get behind them.  Pissed me off when they 'investigated' Joe the plumber and it pisses me off they would investigate 'O'.

On a local police level that is.  If the media were ever to get off their ass and do their job then it would different.

As to who would turn them in .... once they hit the national computer I'm sure it alerted a whole bunch of folks.

At the bank where I used to work, we had large numbers of celebrities as clients.  In my back office job I would have to look up a celebrities information every so often.  I had to prove I had to have a need to know when it got kicked back.   Big bank took privacy seriously.   So does the secret service.

They had no need to look him up.  That was a big error on their part

But I would love to know what they found out too.

I doubt that they found anything, their search was probably blocked, and flagged.

If there was nothing found then the Media will wring their hands for a week about privacy violations and many bonfires at the Island will be stoked bashing those two cops and law enforcement in general.

If there was something that popped up...you won't hear another word about the case...ever!

I gotta side with the powers that be on this one. Running a background check without cause or permission is against the rules at 99.99% of law enforcement agencies.

There is also a system in place to alert the big boys in D.C. whenever a name like POTUS is run through NCIC. Just ask the officer who ran Ronald Reagan at my old dept. :-) Nothing happened but the Chief got a phone call.

I'm curious of the powers that be would still have come down on the officer like a sack of bricks if the officer had immediately answered that he was training a n00b on the computer system?

There's a difference between googling and running an NCIC check.  These guys were wrong, abuse of the system for political reasons should be punished.  We can't bitch about Joe the Plumber and not bitch about this, not unless you want to be on the same level as the DUmmies.

I wonder if they were motivated by political reasons. Even if I had voted for 0Bama, I still might be tempted to do that if given the chance.  Some of his supporters have to be curious if there is any truth to some of the rumors about him.

In a semi-related theme, another reason why a nationalized healthcare database would be bad from a potential abuse standpoint.  Imagine how many times a political hack would just "accidentally" look up their opponent's health records, like they did with Michael Steele's credit record, Joe the Plumber's tax records, etc., etc., etc...
