Do you find it easier to bond with people who also have a mental illness?

I do. I find I naturally gravitate towards other people with mental illnesses, without even realizing it.

One of my best friends has bipolar, as well as a cousin who I'm quite close with.
Several of my friends have depression and/or anxiety, including the majority of my close ones.

One of my only close friends who doesn't have a diagnosis is pretty much textbook for BDD, but horribly reluctant to go see a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Is this healthy?

The way I see it, it is. I think sometimes people only get it if they've been through it themselves.

I dunno.  Speaking as a deaf person, I find other deaf persons rather boring.

So probably it's not a good idea for nuts to hang around with other nuts.

As someone once said--at first I thought it was Clare Boothe Luce, but it wasn't--if one wishes to acquire good manners, one should hang around with people with good manners; if one wishes to acquire taste and class and sophistication, one should hang around with people with taste and class and sophistication, and so on.

The forked primitive, whose main delusion is that he thinks he knows more about sports than the cboy4 primitive:

1. They usually seem saner to me then the so-called sane people.

It's not a requirement for me to get along with someone, but it sure helps.

That is how most democrat underground posters feel.

Also, I doubt hanging around was a phrase often used by the lovely and elegant Clare Boothe Luce, unless speaking of artwork.

Yeah, probably not; I was paraphrasing it from memory.

I think actually it was said by a newspaper reporter during the first third of the twentieth century, something to the effect that if one wants to know about sports, one should hang around with people who know about sports.

A good lesson for the forked primitive to ponder; if he really wishes to know about sports, he should sit on the floor at the feet of the cboy4 primitive and listen with rapt attention, absorbing every word on the subject from the cboy4 primitive without interruption or dispute.

As for the original issue, I feel very strongly about this.  If franksolich had hung around with others like franksolich, franksolich would've ended up just like them; whiny, bitchy, growing fat while subsisting on social security disability and mood-altering pharmaceuticals.

There's a lesson in this for the mentally-ill primitives; they really need to hang around with sane people, not primitives like themselves.

That is, if they honestly wish to overcome their mental-illness, which they might, or might not, want to do.

Considering that's a common trait associated with people who post at DU, I would say that it must be.

As a very junior management type, I worked at a plant that had been a defense plant during the war. As one response to the wartime labor shortage, they had hired a very large number of deaf men, probably several hundred. I have no idea where they found them. When I was there in the 60s, I'd say roughly 10% of the workforce was deaf,  holdovers from this wartime hiring. These guys were very uneducated, but if they were whiny, they did it among themselves in sign language and no one else knew about it. They were known to be reliable workers who always showed up on time and caused no problems. In a unionized workforce, that's about as high a compliment as anyone gets. Of course, this was at a time when The Great Society was just beginning its assault on American society, so maybe things are different now.

Yep, different generation, different values.

Some years ago, by chance, I learned that one of my former professors, when talking about me to another professor, frankly admitted that I "hadn't been pushed very hard" in college, because the assumption was that I'd end up on social security disability anyway, and so there was no point in it.

This attitude is VERY prevalent in social services agencies that try to "mainstream" the "handicapped;" rather than finding us jobs, they push us to apply for social security disability instead.

It gets very lonely at times, standing resolutely against the tide.

But somehow it pleases God that franksolich stands.
