DU former meat-eaters who've made the transition to vegetarianism: How difficult was it? .....

..... I keep thinking about it, but visions of lamb chops, Buffalo wings and corned beef sandwiches keep dancing in my head. For those who've done it, how hard was it to give up el carne, seriously?

2. As hard or easy as we make it ourselves. There is no one plan fits all. I am a omnivore. But if you
are considering changing your habits, just out of curiosity, why make it all or nothing?
Why not plan 2 vegetarian days a week or 4? Or whatever suits you. Then stick to it for 3 months and and re-evaluate.

DUmmies have lots of words, like "winger", "repuke", "freeper", and "omnivore" that all mean "normal". That is not meant to imply that DUmmy John Q. Citizen is in any way normal, other than his diet.

24. No shit! Thin skin or hateful of the OP.
I think an unrec is okay if you own uo to it. If it gets done anonymously, the person doing it is a COWARDLY chickenshit jerkoff.

8. Easy easy easy
I had thought about it for years. Stopped eating red meat a long time ago. I just decided on July 4th a year ago not to eat animal tissue and here I am. I love my new way of living.

It requires a change in taste, at least it did for me. Some things you think you should eat right away taste odd at first. Now is a great time to do it because of all the fresh v*****s. Ease into the other stuff by going to VegWeb or buying a v****e cookbook and make tasty recipes. Spices are the key for me.

Just go for it. If it is really hard but you still want to do it just ease into it. My husband is actually eating much less meat and seems pretty happy with the stuff I cook for myself, he will be joining me I think one of these days.

Go for it!

"Animal tissue"? Living with DUmmy MuseRider would be hell on earth.

10. I guess it would depend upon your motivations.
Is it health? Environmental concerns? Ethical reasons?

I was lucky in that I grew up eating very little meat so that when I removed animal products from my diet, it wasn't much of an adjustment. I also never had a very serious relationship with food, other than the fact that I need it to live. And being that it was for ethical reasons, I had a pretty easy time deciding that regardless of how good it might taste, I would have no problem abstaining.

Depending on where you live, most restaurants these days are pretty accommodating to vegetarians, sometimes to vegans as well. Grocery stores have selections that make it so easy, I think younger vegans such as myself have little appreciation for just how hard it was many years ago.

My advice, regardless of your motivations: do what works best for you, whether it's phasing it out or doing it all at once. And don't be intimidated by how much it seems you need to learn about nutrition, the animal products that are hidden in all kinds of things, etc. You won't get kicked out of the Super Secret V****e Club because you happen to buy soap with glycerin at first, or because you drink a beer that you later find out has isinglass, and you'll learn it as you go.
And check out the V****e group here on DU. There are tons of great people there with a lot of information to give.

Hope that helps. PM me if you have other questions.

Soap with glycerin? Beer with isinglass? WTF?

17. I have given up meat, soda and candy bars and it was always the same
I kinda craved it for several months, but then it all started to smell and sound disgusting to me. I also went from whole milk to skim and had the same experience. You couldn't pay me to drink whole milk now. I think there are lots of great soy based fake meat products out there. Try them and see what you think.

Things like this keep me inspired to do what I think is the right thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIjanhKqVC4
Warning: it is graphic.

I have completely eliminated soy and tofu from my diet. They smell and sound disgusting. I'm working toward an all-meat diet. Salads are a challenge.

25. Unless you're eating locally grown meat where you are well-informed of how the farmers treat the
animals & have them slaughtered, you can rest assured the animals are treated horribly & live in horrible conditions, all the way to slaughter.
Even "organic" doesn't guarantee humane treatment - you need to research those sources (much of the industrial organic is little better in terms of how the animals are treated).

DUmmy lindisfarne endorses eathing meat, but only if the animal died of natural causes after receiving tender care in a veterinary hospice.

31. Why not work v****e meals into your schedule
You might be surprised how much you like them -- and how much better you feel!

Make half your meals cruelty-free or have a "vegan day" once or twice a week.

Nah. The cruelty adds a sweet taste to the meat that you just can't get any other way.

It has to do with his, and frank's, distaste for the word "veggie"

Then why are 90% of the DUmbasses lardasses?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I have an idea, how about we filter the word veggies, and replace it with vaginas.

"Mmmmmm... fresh vaginas are yummy for my tummy."  :evillaugh:

As a card-carrying member of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals), I fully endorse this concept. The less meat they eat, the more there is for me.

Aside: Speaking of meat, I recently discovered the McDonald's Angus Mushroom Swiss burger - Its a $4 piece of heaven. -- and I don't say that often about any fast food anywhere.

Oh yes, and quite a strong loathing it is.

"Veggie" is baby-talk.

Okay, so I dashed over to Skins's island briefly.

The orange marmalade primitive posted this in "General Discussion."

My fellow alum Skins has kindly provided two specialty forums for the topic, either "Cooking and Baking" or "Health," where this bonfire really belongs, rather than in "General Discussion."

My fellow alum has really got to do something about this, the primitives posting everything in "General Discussion," instead of where it belongs.

But we know how it goes; it's hip, it's trendy, it's cool, it's with it, to be seen in "General Discussion," and the orange marmalade primitive wants to be with the "cool" primitives instead of with the dork primitives in the smaller forums.

Man, talk about being high-schoolish.

Absolutely. V****e, y***y, t***y, and similar cutesy words are as irritating as moonbats, men who wear ballcaps in restaurants, and guys who lift their heels as they walk.

How about that! It looks like Skimmer is taking advice from his fellow alum franksolich on cleaning up his GD forum and getting all this silly chitchat moved into the dork forums where it belongs.

The DUmp admins should put up a sticky note crediting coach for this editorial improvement. But you know they won't. They have only hate and envy for their betters.

Well, I doubt I had anything to do with it--the primitives don't pay any attention to me--but why the Lounge, where the dorks hang out?  Wouldn't this be better in either the Cooking and Baking forum, or the Health forum?

You know, I'd really just as soon my fellow alum Skins pay attention to this:

http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/topic,31312.0.html

about how to turn Skins's island into a cash cow.

Because of the old school tie, I want Skins to flourish and prosper, along with the elusive enigmatic Elad; Lord Marblehead EarlG, not so much.

Besides turning Skins's island into a cash cow, please notice that one of the suggestions involves primitives who light bonfires in inappropriate forums, and franksolich's solution to that.

Denial without accusation is suspicious indeed.
