My Cats

So the baby has been home three weeks now and needless to say, she has all my attention and the cats have been put aside, temporarily.
I keep the litter box in the garage because I don't want the smell to permeate my house.  Having a newborn in the house and not wanting to take the chance of her growing allergies to cats, I've been keeping them in the garage, away from the baby.  They are being fed, their litter boxes are cleaned..etc...but they are not getting the love and attention that they usually receive from me.

One night, I let Cleo stay inside the house and she would not leave my side...it was really very nice showering her with attention for the day...but back in the garage at night.

But something is wrong...they are depressed, they are not eating..my older cat has gotten very thin and has diarrhea(she's 17)...Cleo has been withdrawn and is leaving food (something she NEVER does...she's a Maine Coon)

Are they depressed...are they missing the human/pet interaction?  What do I do? Should I start letting them come inside....?

Don't sweat it.  I raised two of them aournd cats and dogs and both lived through it just fine! :-)

And yeah they do get depressed and miss the interaction.  Very much so.

Awww...what a cute photo...I read somewhere that if a cat gets jealous of the baby, they are known to lie across them and suffocate them....probably a story from an animal hater..but I'll know I'll be the paranoid type...not that I believe it will really happen...my cats are loveable...

I brought my daughter home and our two cats pretty much ignored her.  Don't let the stories scare you and if allergies is a concern, feel free to talk about it with her doctor. I have been told that exposore to cats early will actually deter allergies but I what do I know, LOL. You should try to set the boundaries with the cats and your little one, like stay out of her room, allow them to smell her, she is the new smell in the house. Try not to worry too much. If the eating becomes a issue after a month or so, take the kitty to the vet, something else might be up. Maybe she just needs kitty Prozac.   :-)

Let the cats in the house.

They are "pining" away....they don't understand why you have kicked them out.

Baby Girl will be fine. The cats will either ignore her, or watch over her. Will probably be close by until she cries, then they will scatter.... :-)

Yeah, I agree. Animals should be introduced and get used to the new baby. We didn't have cats when our kids were little, but we have had dogs. They get used to the humiliation sometimes a child puts them through, especially when they get to be toddlers. :-)

I say say let the kitties inside...I've raised all my kids with at least 2 cats in the house since the day they were born.  If you are worried, keep baby's bedroom door closed at night so they can't go in.   Not fair to your cats to be shut away from you, IMO.

I put a cheap wooden screen door on my kid's bedroom when they were babies.  That way the cat couldn't snuggle them but I could hear them.  My cat was really really fat back then.  I didn't worry about him hurting them, just that he would sit on them in their sleep.  If it makes you feel any better my son has been around cats since birth.  Cat and dog are about the only things under the sun that he is NOT allergic to.

That's an old wives tale HG. Cats like warmth and what could be warmer than a babies crib! If that did happen{a cat suffocating a baby!}it was more than likely entirely on accident. I wouldn't want them anywhere near the baby just because they walk around in their own poop in the litterbox! :-)

my mancubs first word was "Ghiddyka!' everytime he saw one of the cats.

Glad to hear you are letting your kitter-kats back in....they will be sooooo happy!!!


I would anticipate a few little surprise "gifts" from them, though, to let you know that you hurt their feelings.

Mine are good at overstuffing themselves, then regurgitating it in my office at the doorway to let me know their current opinion of me. Usually happens when I go away for a couple of days....  :whatever:

They've been in the garage ...how long?  ....3 weeks?

That could result in several "opinions"....... :lmao:

you might also want to get the cats used to the various indignities that small children inflict on them by petting them and tugging at ears and tail.  I did that to mine before my kids were born, never had an issue with him scratching either of them.
