Attention, please.

Probably many of you, like franksolich, have been mystified and perplexed by a certain addition in the primitive vocabulary, that of "+1".

This is something new; this isn't something old that was never noticed.

Well, the primitive code has been broken.

"+1" on Skins's island means "I agree," and is used in those instances where the primitives don't know how to spell words longer than four letters.

That is all.  Thank you for your attention.

It's pretty annoying to me, this "+1" nonsense.

It cuts down on my speed and efficiency of copying-and-pasting, because I have to pause to delete the damn thing.

It's just really pretty stupid.

I think it's a term for approval that springs from many DUmmies wanting to be "ghetto cool".

Read as "and one", it comes from the cheer given a streetballer when he scores a basket while being assaulted, and is awarded with a free throw.

So he scores the two-point field goal "and one".

It isn't unlike the habit many DUmmies have of wearing ballcaps with the bill to the back or side. Ghetto cool. Of course they don't know that the direction of one's cap bill is a clear indicator of the direction of one's life.

You know, it's kind of like what the primitives did during one of those rare and ineffectual attempts by my fellow alum to shut down discussion of the late red round one during the Scamdal four years ago.

The primitives then reverted to exchanging recipes for chicken soup so as to (temporarily) avoid mentioning the subject, thinking that decent and civilized people wouldn't figure out what it was the primitives were doing.

It was all very silly.

The primitives think they're cute, talking in "code," but actually they're just stupid.

in the case of The Island , I think +1 is a way of visually recommending posts now that there is the unrec feature. Its a primitive way of declaring solidarity with the OP.

Yeah, because of the time and trouble and nuisance of having to pause to delete those stupid "+1"s when copying-and-pasting, I'm thinking about never quoting any primitives using them.

Fortunately, the only primitives unimaginative to use "+1" are primitives of no prominence, the unterprimitiven, and so it's no great loss, as I spend my time only with Primitives of Prominence.
