Yarrrgghhh! Bigmouth right-wing wacko contractor working on my house!
zOMG I am just about ready to go off on this guy. He will NOT shut up and it's like hearing Free Republic brought to life in my own house! (He's talking to his coworkers; I'm in the living room trying to work.) First he was ranting about how Michael Jackson was a child molester (I have no opinion on that either way, but I guess he doesn't know what the word "acquitted" means); now he's going on and on about how we HAVE to model our government on the bible because if we don't "we're acting like we know better than Jesus!"

I should note that this guy is not the owner of the business. The owner is here, as is his father, also working, and they are the nicest guys you'd ever care to meet. But this other one...gaaah!

They're working quickly, which means he'll be outta here in a few days' time, give or take, and thank goodness. But I might have to make myself scarce until they're done; otherwise I fear my blood pressure will suffer.

3. Say something to the owner. For gawd's sakes, it is your house.
Tell them you don't mind them visiting with each other while they work, but would appreciate that
the discussion not include politics.

7. I'd sure as shit say something
This is what I would say to the owner:
"Look, I'm paying you guys to do this work. If I had wanted to hear some idiot spew rightwing garbage I'd turn on my television, tune into Fox News, and turn it up as loud as your jerk employee. Either take care of it now or pack up and leave. I won't pay for that kind of crap."

That would be a very smart thing for a DUmmy to do.

Now here is a DUmmy who took that advice:

23. During our house build one worker had right wing radio on all the time
I made it clear that I would not permit that. In fact the first time I heard it, I did not recognize who was talking (I am still not sure since the only time I hear that crap is when Olbermann replays stuff) but it was so full of hate I made a crack about the content. The worker said, "Oh you must be one of those liberals." I responded, "Damn straight. And I'm paying the bills here so if you want to keep working you will turn that off when I am here!"

He did, but that is the worker that single handed delayed the completion of our house by months by nailing a waterline and ruining a finished floor and walked off the job before we found the window he had also ruined by nailing. Thinking back, I wonder if those incidents were on purpose?

Smart move, huh?

DUmmy angrycarpenter can't resist inserting a lie of his own:

14. The construction business is full of guys like that.
I once told my supervisor that if he didn't find someone other than Rush on the radio that I was walking off the job. My co-workers backed me up and he turned it to country music. Not a big improvement bur better.

15. Stop work order
Whenever I had to deal with bullshit, I'd put in a stop work order and start discussing how long it would be before a contractor's lien would be paid. I hope you haven't given these yokels an advance. If not, tell them the job is over NOW, you will be getting a replacement to finish the job, and you will pay them the difference between the new bill and their original estimate.

You can always count on getting sound advice at the DUmp.

These DUmmies are supposed to be so "smart", why can't they do their own work?

It's not like it's rocket science or global warming or something like that.  Just your basic electric, carpentry, and plumbing work....

I built an addition (16x40) onto my house myself, did all the work myself, what I didn't know I got a book and LEARNED how to do it.  I'm sure a DUmmie could pry itself away from the monitor and the DUmp for 5-6 hours a day and do their own contracting work....

This might actually be at least partially true.

I wonder where the DUmmies found these contractors.  When my Dad was having his house built the only thing he had to tell the construction workers was "no drugs on the premises" after he caught them lighting up.  They started to complain so he showed them his badge and told them he was already cutting them slack, so they could respect his wishes.  After that, they would show up late and leave early, but he estimates they got the same amount of work done.

But is the work crew is speaking spanish, no papers, and low bid that is not a problem
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

OFFS, conservatives have to endure pro-union stickers on the vehicles of plumbers and other assorted workers who might come to their house....suck it up and deal. I've had to deal with leering contractors as I walk in my gym from next door. Never crossed my mind to complain to the mgmt of my gym. What's the point? That's a very temporary condition and imo kind of the nature of the beast. Just ignore it and let the work get done.

Umm...I'd watch that broad brush. I can think of a number of conservative guys who wouldn't dream to do anything like that kind of work. They are smart at what they do for a living, but they wouldn't dream of or are lost when it comes to a toolbox. Not exclusive to DUmmies I'm afraid.

I was in construction for 30 years. I don't recall a single liberal! Not even the union guys. Most of them would rather not be in the union, but didn't have a choice if they wanted to work.

Oh, but that was sooooo long ago, the good old golden days when you had a job.  That was before you sold your tools and truck for much-needed cash.   I was wondering where you went, AC.

There is a lucky mrs. thundley4 who is the beneficiary of your home project expertise. Not all of us conservative gals are so lucky I'm afraid. Hell, some of us don't even have ones that will call the work out. The house would sooner fall apart then get maintained. :thatsright:

Actually in this part of the country, very few are DimWits. I'm sure their leaders are, but most of them are conservative. Not sure how they vote as most Democrats up here are pretty conservative too. Most will vote Dem because they were raised that way.

Maybe it's just me, but I find that anything I decide to do with my hands, I can handle.

Mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding, carpentry, masonry, tile....All of it comes naturally to me.  Heck, my dad taught me how to weld when I was 11, I was driving tractors when I was 8, and I'm talking the 100hp big boys, not L & G tractors.
I wired and plumbed my dad's home addition when I was 14, taught myself HVAC and air conditioning at 18.

When you grow up on a dairy farm, you learn to do a lot of this stuff, or pay thru the nose to have someone else do it....

I dunno, maybe I'M the "odd bird" here....

Meanwhile, I have an automatic transmission to rebuild....

I suppose I have an advantage here because I was in construction, but I help many people figure their stuff out and do it themselves. I'm working part time at the Home Depot selling hardware. I agree there are some that shouldn't be doing it all, but for the most part, the average homeowner can handle just about anything having to do with maintenance on their homes.

I didn't work "construction", per se, but on a farm, there is always something being built, repaired, expanded, etc.

I've built feedlots, loafing barns, machinery sheds, calf barns.  It's been a fun life so far, and I'm hoping the second half will be just as fun....  :-)

Yeah, farm life will teach you a lot. I was driving dozers at age, 6 operating for hire by age 10. Had my own tractor and dozer before finishing highschool. Damn I was rich back then..........where'd it all go? Now I remember, I discovered GIRLS....been broke ever since. :rotf:
