WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says its high-profile garden on the South Lawn has tested positive for lead although it is not at dangerous levels.
White House spokeswoman Katie McCormick-Lelyveld said Thursday that tests on the soil in the White House garden detected lead levels of 93 parts per million. Soil is considered unsafe for growing vegetables when it reaches more than 500 parts per million.

First lady Michelle Obama planted the garden on the South Lawn this spring with local schoolchildren. Produce from it is used in the White House kitchens and donated to area groups. ...

The Obama Organic Family Garden: Swimming in Sludge?

Literally, Holy Crap!!!What caused this alarming contamination of the White House lawn? Some news outlets speculated that residue from lead paint might have caused the toxicity. However an article running on Mother Jones online has a more probable explanation. During the 1990s, the Clintons agreed to have the South Lawn of the White House "fertilized" with ComPRO, a commercially available "compost made from a nearby wastewater plant's solid effluent, a.k.a. sewage sludge."

So, the White House lawn became a highly visible example of a little-known, widely conducted practice, "land application". This means disposing of sewage sludge by spraying it over public lands, including parks, and also on an untold number of acres of farmland where our food is grown. Sadly, it's completely legal under current, grossly inadequate EPA rules.

We suspected the Clintons were giving out the "Vince Foster" treatment pretty liberally in those days, but right out on the White House lawn?!?!?  :-)

What's the big deal? The soil is well below what is considered unsafe levels.  I am positive that there are much higher and more dangerous levels of lead in other areas of DC. I know there are much more dangerous levels of lead in Detroit.

Good thing she didn't start with imported children.  I hear they are much more diffuclt to grow.   :thatsright:

At least Shelly has an ample supply of fertilizer with which to work.

Though God help her if the Moose-Limbs ever air burst a nuke over Washington DC; TOTUS would be toast, and THEN who'd put words into Lord Ø's mouth...

"Test positive for lead"......"Obama"......oh the comments one could make with that.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin
