Arizona Senate OKs Immigration Enforcement Bill

Wednesday, July 01, 2009
By Jacques Billeaud, Associated Press

Phoenix (AP) - Arizona has moved a step closer to becoming the only state to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants through an expansion of its trespassing law.

A 16-11 vote by the Arizona Senate early Wednesday would criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants in the state. The measure must still be approved in the House and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer.

Supporters say local police enforcing an expanded trespassing law would provide a second layer of enforcement to catch immigrants who slip past federal agents.

Opponents predict it would lead to racial profiling that would target thousands of Latinos who are U.S. citizens.

Illegal immigrants account for an estimated 500,000 people in Arizona's 6.5 million population.

'Bout time.  The rest of the border states should do the same.

The only thing which kept it from happening before was that [blank] who was governor and whom is now the [blank] in charge of DHS.

Kook-uh-porn-e-uh, new mexico and texas should follow their lead.  It would put a real crimp in illegal immigration.

Hi,

Very interesting.  It is one more giant step for the state of AZ in establishing their sovereignty and giving the federal government the finger.  They also have bills pending that will opt them out of federal health care.  Funny, but I sent Glenn Beck a note yesterday asking what would happen if the Gov. of AZ sent in his national guard, armed, paid and fed, and had them protect their borders, with bullets in their chambers as well.  That would appear to me to be something the state has every right to do, would be interesting to see what the federal government does.  If they pulled it off, wonder how long before TX follows.  If CA got smart and did that, then every time an illegal went to a health care facility they treated them, and then sent them home....might go a long way toward solving their budget crisis.
