A new scheme by credit card companies - you gotta believe it.

My wife and I have a credit card bill that we paid on time. We got the next bill and has a late fee charge that put us over the limit. I called the credit card company and asked to remove the late charge, and the IDIOT on the other line said the in order for me to have the late fee charge removed, I have to write a friggin' letter. I told them NO. I want the late fee charges removed, and I want it off via the phone. I went to my spiel about how unscrupulous credit card companies are and how they decide to stick it to us.

I'm already filing a complaint via BBB and will write a complaint letter to Chase directly asking them to close our account and remove us from further offers and I will be telling them that Chase has no more business from us.

Like Chase Manhattan is going to miss the cross-eyed Iowa primitive's business?

1. Don't hurt yourself out of spite. Chase sure doesn't GAS about you and if you close your account, it will only improve /their balance sheet because they have less potential credit use exposure. If you close your account it will be YOUR credit rating that will suffer.

I don't know what kind of proof you have of paying your bill on time (whick is why I always pay mine online and keep the email receipt), but you may want to call back, get a different rep, and try an appology first. You were upset and gave the first rep a difficult time which SHE (as just an employee) didn't deserve. ASK that the late fee be removed because you always pay your bills on time....etc.

I'm only looking out for YOUR well being and although we all get pissed off from time to time, you don't want to harm yourself through your anger.

2. Filed a complaint via BBB.

And actually my wife made the call first, and got the same lame response, so she asked me to call - guess what - same lame response, so they just lost our business. We'll pay them off and leave it open. Let them close us first, these bastards.

4. I'm sorry to hear that you got such poor service from them. I have a Chase card, and have actually had very good CS from them. I actually DID miss my CC pmt by 1 day once, and I called and asked if they would consider waving the late fee because I always pay the balance in full a few days early and I just screwed up this time.

Their response was yse we will do it this time, but we are only allowed to do this once a year. I also had purchased a package deal on some magazines last year, but the idiots auto renewed without ever getting authorization from me, so last years charge of $9.95 turned into a renewal fee of $127.00 this year!!!! I tried to contact the mag. service to no avail and I contacted CHase. They sent me the forms, and deleted the charges.

I can only assume they have some decent reps and some not so much.

...but you need to have proof. If you mailed your payment, they can always say it got delayed in the mail (which is always considered the payer's fault).

I'm with the other poster on this thread. If you're paying a credit card or other bill, do it online and save a copy of the final screen that shows the payment, date, and confirmation number. If nothing else, get one of the freeware PDF drivers (I use BullZip), and print a copy of that page to a PDF file on your computer.

I've written about this so many times I don't really want to have to go over the entire matter again, but, many years ago, Chase tried to pull this same sort of stunt on me when I closed my account rather than accede to their extortionist interest-rate hike. They refused to acknowledge that I had actually canceled on time until I informed them that I had an e-copy of the Express Mail receipt not only showing the date it was received by them, but the signature of the employee who received it. It was interesting how quickly they changed their tune at that point but, had I not had the documentation, I'm sure they would have just insisted it was my fault and screwed me over.

Like I said: Chase is slime.

But that can't be true.  The Rockefellers are all liberal Democrats now.

7. The people you talk to have no discretion in those matters. The rules are the rules, and the people answering the calls are just there to tell you what the rules are.

Do you have the cancelled check or the email receipt? Was it even close?

9. I hate to tell you

BBB is a SHAM. I worked for them once. Called on businesses to sell them a stupid plastic plaque that says: "Member of the BBB." I charged whatever I could get - one car dealership paid $900 for it. Smaller businesses could get it for $25. Yes, they DO keep a record of complaints, but I have never known them to DO anything with the complaints (except tell callers how many complaints are on file with a particular business).

This was many years ago, maybe things are different now. Hope so for your sake. Best of luck; When my credit card company did the same thing, I canceled the card on the spot. Yes, I know that doing so dinged my credit, but screw them.

10. I paid off three cc's and cancled two when they sent me a letter that said we are rasing your rate to 25% and charging you a $85 a year account fee. if you don't want to pay the fee close your account with us. So I did.

I'll bet the BBB gives you nothing. Aren't they one of those organizations that is actually run by the businesses themselves? (Like FINRA.)

Contact your state regulator. I did that in a different circumstance, and it worked wonders for me. I wouldn't be surprised if your state is already pursuing JPM/Chase for some other matters. It helps if you can find 5-10 other people with similar problems.

12. Doesn't always work but...

I have learned over the years that if the initial person I talk to says 'no', actually I think that is a big part of their job, then I just ask to talk to a supervisor and pretty much everytime the supervisor says something along the line of 'sure I can take care of that for you'. The first person you talk to usually doesn't have many options as to what they can do to help you.

13. The last time I asked to speak to a ShittyBank supervisor...they put me on hold for ten minutes then the same guy came on telling me he was the supervisor. Pretty sure Chase uses the same "customer service" tactics.

Yeah! And if EVERYBODY closed their accounts Chase would have zero credit exposure making their rating absolutely fabulous! Why...they could rule da wurld!

What an idiot.  He's going to be paying them interest on a maxed-out card for months and probably years anyway, cancelling the card is no skin off their nose.  If he had a decent credit rating in the first place, they probably would have offered to raise his limit, of course him making a rectal aperture out of himself on the phone probably didn't inspire them to go above and beyond either.
