South Carolina Governor Missing

SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife
Jun 22 04:32 PM US/Eastern
BY JIM DAVENPORT
Associated Press Writer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Where is South Carolina's governor?

The lieutenant governor doesn't know, and neither does a state senator who's a close confidante. Even his wife is in the dark.

Gov. Mark Sanford's unannounced absence from the state capitol perplexed some politicians Monday, and his staff wouldn't say where he was. His wife said she hadn't heard from him in several days—including Father's Day.

"He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids," Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing with the couple's four sons at their Sullivans Island beach house. She said she wasn't concerned about her husband, the state's two-term Republican chief executive.

Sanford, who's also chairman of the Republican Governors Association, earned a reputation as the nation's most vocal anti-bailout governor by refusing $700 million in federal stimulus money for schools until he lost a court battle earlier this month.

His spokesman Joel Sawyer released a statement saying the governor was taking a break after losing the fight.

"Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside," Sawyer said.

Sawyer wouldn't say where Sanford was or confirm that he knew the governor's whereabouts himself. Law enforcement officials who handle his security also declined to comment. After releasing the statement, Sawyer didn't immediately respond to further questions about whether Sanford was keeping in touch with staff.

Sanford typically is open about his whereabouts, and his office makes no secret of time spent on vacation or out of state.

But politicians, including the lieutenant governor, said they did not know Sanford was taking time away from his office.

State Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican, Sanford confidante and former chief of staff, said his calls to Sanford were going straight to voice mail. Calls from The Associated Press to the governor's cell phone also went to voice mail.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he didn't know where Sanford was but said he had not been put in charge.

Bauer spokesman Frank Adams said he had been told Sanford chief of staff Scott English was in touch with the governor. "They assure they know where he is," Adams said.

English did not immediately respond to a message left seeking comment.

Sen. Jake Knotts, a Lexington Republican and a persistent Sanford critic, said the state needs to know where its governor is.

"The way things are in the world today and homeland security, we need the governor to be fingertips away," Knotts said. "Somebody's got to be in charge."

According to the Drudge Report, he just showed up.

He was apparently off in solitude writing a book or something, and didn't want to be disturbed.

You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

Sanford admits affair, apologizes to family
Governor apologizes to wife, sons and friends
By GINA SMITH - gnsmith@thestate.com

-- BREAKING: Sanford admits he has been unfaithful to his wife.

Gov. Mark Sanford admitted today that his secret trip to Argentina over Father's Day weekend was to visit a woman he is having an affair with.

Mark Sanford left the Governor's Mansion in this black State Law Enforcement Division Suburban assigned to his security detail. The Suburban remained parked Wednesday morning at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

"I have developed a relationship with what started as a dear dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I expect many of these things do, just casual email back and forth," Sanford said. "But here recently this last year developed into something much more."

Asked if Sanford was separated from his wife, he said "I don't know how you want to define that. I"m here and she's there. I guess in a formal sense we are not."

Sanford said his wife has known about the affair and they have been working through it for the past five months. "What I did was wrong, period. End of story," Sanford said. (more at link)

Media indignation/double standard starting in 3... 2... 1...  I'm sure the hens on CNN and the rest of the media will tell us what a horrible hypocrite Sanford is; no mention of Bill Clinton, Gary Hart, John Edwards, or Elliot Spitzer will be forthcoming.  This may be the first Republican "sex scandal" that actually involves sex.

Sanford will be resigning his position as chairman of the National Republican Governors Association.  Maybe they'll elect Sarah Palin in his place.

edit: Haley Barbour will be taking over the NRGA position.

Kevin, weren't you "pimping" Sanford as a good alternative for President?? Didn't I oppose your sentiments??

WTF is it about the Republicans throwing away their "family values"?? First John Ensign and now, Mark Sanford.  :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

Political party notwithstanding, a politician who allows him/herself to step outside of the marriage in favor of some strange leg, illustrates nothing but some seriously flawed judgment.

No way is Sanford a candidate for the Repub ticket now, if ever he was (doubtful, since he knew his trip down the Boulevard de la Strange Nookie was going to become public sooner or later). In a way, he did the right thing by coming clean right away without the finger wagging at the camera and the intoned "I did not have sexual relations with Ms. uh, X."

All this does is show quite clearly that politicians of ANY political party can't really be trusted with the simplest of ethical standards.

Judge Politano is sitting in for Beck this afternoon.....so far he and Cavuto both have had people on that say this is human....regardless of which political party one is in.

Having been married to a surgeon....seems they take a course in med school "How to commit adultery without getting caught".....lawyers, politicians, company CEO's......they all do it.

I think the biggest issue....is adultery is acceptable.

You can say it isn't all you want....but it is.

It happens, everyone is in turmoil, fingers are pointed, snickers and sneers occur......two - three days, weeks, months...something else hits the gossip trail and someone new is talked about.

Everyone and everything goes on....the adulterer goes on as before as far as being accepted as an individual.

Lost in the debris is the spouse and children of the adulterer. They are the ones who remember the gossip, the finger pointing and stares....the change in their lives. Lifestyle, home - physical site and emotional haven, change in school, all of it.....

I'm sure if you think about those you personally know who have gone through this.....you will realize it's true.

("you" is generic....)

Double murder doesn't quite compare with adultery, but as debk says in her post above, there's a lot more damage out there than meets the eye.

And for a sitting governor to be dippin' his wick where it doesn't belong, well, can anybody spell "BILL CLINTON?"

Personally, I think adultery is despicable behavior and immediate grounds for impeachment. Since he's demonstrated that he can't be trusted in his married life, in which he's doubtless professed before God his vows, why shouldn't the voter think that the governor is just as incapable of keeping the oath of office that he took before God as well?

Character and ethics mean a LOT to this voter.

Euph? I love ya brother but this is not a new phenomenon! Human beings have always done this and will continue to do this. Do you really believe that the politicians you have voted for over the years have always been the proverbial rock your church is built on? This is not new! Men in positions of power in both political parties have done this ,do this now and will continue to do this. If yopu want ethics....don't put your faith in a politician.
