Happy birthday, Magna Carta...The agreement was soon broken and only later that century was it finally recognised in law, but June 15, 1215 remains the most important day in English history. Most of the clauses actually involved either baron's rights or practical stuff like weights and measures. However Clause 39 still resonates today as one of the most powerful sentences in history.
No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land.
