Boston Globe union rejects contract, paper to impose pay cut

BOSTON - The Boston Globe said Monday it would impose a 23% pay cut on its largest union after members voted to reject a new contract the company said was crucial to keep the paper alive.
The Boston Newspaper Guild voted, 277 to 265, against the contract, which included an 8.3% wage reduction, five-day unpaid furloughs and cuts in health and pension benefits.
It also would have eliminated lifetime job guarantees for 190 Guild workers.
The Globe said in a statement that as a result of the no vote, it would impose the pay cut next week. The New York Times Co., which owns the Globe, has threatened to close the 137-year-old paper.

Hi,

Great news, I hope they go on losing money indefinitely because it is owned by the NYT.  Smartest thing the NYT could do is cut their losses and run.  Golly, I can't imagine what it must be like to have a lifetime job guarantee.  I recall a former boss of mine reminding me that the company's obligation to me stops when my paycheck clears the bank.  Hard to hear, but he was really right.

Was not too long after that I went into business for myself.....

Yes, Union leadership uis unfocused. What would have happened if the Widget industry had been equally unionized and politically connected? Would all cars have utterly useless widgets screwed to our dashboards? Paper newspapers are becoming primarily obosolete.

The unions Need to recognise to keep anyone on the payroll, everything must change.

Sorta reminds me of back when I was a kid, my grandfather worked for the railroad as a "fireman" and continued to do so well after the transition from steam to diesel........we all know how well that worked out for the railroads........
