When the Magic Fades

When the Magic Fades

At first it seemed like a few random cases of lassitude among Mary Chapin Carpenter devotees in Berkeley, Cambridge and Chapel Hill. But then psychotherapists began to realize patients across the country were complaining of the same distress. They were experiencing the first hints of what’s bound to be a national phenomenon: Obama Comedown Syndrome.

The afflicted had already been through the phases of Obama-mania — fainting at rallies, weeping over their touch screens while watching Obama videos, spending hours making folk crafts featuring Michelle Obama’s face. These patients had experienced intense surges of hope-amine, the brain chemical that fuels euphoric sensations of historic change and personal salvation.

But they found that as the weeks went on, they needed more and purer hope-injections just to preserve the rush. They wound up craving more hope than even the Hope Pope could provide, and they began experiencing brooding moments of suboptimal hopefulness. Anxious posts began to appear on the Yes We Can! Facebook pages. A sense of ennui began to creep through the nation’s Ian McEwan-centered book clubs.

Up until now The Chosen One’s speeches had seemed to them less like stretches of words and more like soul sensations that transcended time and space. But those in the grips of Obama Comedown Syndrome began to wonder if His stuff actually made sense. For example, His Hopeness tells rallies that we are the change we have been waiting for, but if we are the change we have been waiting for then why have we been waiting since we’ve been here all along?

Obama Is A More Dangerous Candidate Than Hillary

Barack Obama touts himself as the change candidate, but whenever I hear him say this I think, "Change to what?" For a long time no one knew. He just kept giving speeches about hope and other abstract words usually found in Hallmark cards. Now we're finally getting some answers on what sort of changes Obama has in mind.

Recently, Obama gave an economic speech revealing positions so extreme that it prompted economist Ben Stein to say, "Obama's understanding of economics is 100 percent wrong. I must say I'm so scared about Mr. Obama becoming president I can hardly tell you." Stein worries Obama will make good on his vow to tax domestic energy producers out of business and kill pensions funds invested in companies Obama doesn't like, among his other $874 billion promises.

How McCain Should Take On Obama

Making the case against Obama's liberalism will bring howls of protest from reporters and columnists who once held McCain up as a courageous "maverick" and who took particular delight when he antagonized conservatives. John McCain's days as the mainstream media's favorite Republican are about to end. One can already anticipate the avalanche of columns denouncing McCain as a flip-flopping, unprincipled panderer.

The mainstream media will insist that using the liberal label is so 1980s. Such name-calling, we will be told, is anachronistic, "old and tired," simple-minded, and a sign of desperation. It may have worked against Michael Dukakis in 1988, they will argue, but we are a better and wiser nation now.

McCain should reject such counsel.

If Obama should win the Democratic nomination, John McCain should go straight at his record -- with precision, without rancor, and relentlessly. John McCain will not win a personality contest against Barack Obama; no political figure in America could. McCain will have to base his campaign on a set of creative, forward-looking ideas that meet the challenges of our time. He will have to make this a race about ideas and about ideology.

Trying to post-whore to 1000, are you?!  :lmao:

J/k.

Seeing all the stories about fainting and such just makes my day, since they are allowing a false hope to consume them.

Who, me?  I didn't notice.   :uhsure:

I'm trying to keep the Election forum from having a thousand articles with the same topic.  If it makes me look like a post whore, then so be it.   :-)

Grrrr, it says my laptop requires additional plug-ins, and I really do not feel like downloading them tonight.  I'll try a school computer in the next couple of days.
