Deuce needs a couple dozen bitchslaps, as well as for hijacking my latest avatar, for the following comments:

"Maybe we really should take the high road and let them (Gitmo detainees) go. A lot of them were just kids when captured."

"It's more of a general depression (about sworn enemies of the U.S. unable to carry out more attacks against us) about the situation. It's a conflict between due process and what's actually right that bothers me.

It was a mistake to take them away.

Apparently the mods were worried about a few limp wristed pussies getting their delicate little feelings hurt.

I would be in favor of bringing them back IF they were used deservedly & judiciously. However, there are some people that just arbitrarily hand out bitch slaps for no reason other than somebody pissed in their Wheaties that morning or they feel like screwing with people. Because of that, we get people that PM us admins, requesting that their count be reduced due to them feeling said BS was unjust. No, this is just another bullshit high school kiddie game that I don't see as worthwhile. Are we adults here or are we pre-pubescents??

Being new to this particular forum, I guess my question is are the BS/H5's like a star system I have seen on other boards?  To rate a post?

If so, sounds good to me, I have seen alot of posts around here that a H5 would have simply sufficed, instead of feeling the need to quote and reply with a verbal H5.  Those seem to clutter up the board, more often than not.  As far as the bitchslaps, well, that is also just a matter of opinion, and everybody isn't gonna agree with everyone.  If you get a BS, best thing to do is not get your panties all in a wad about it, right?  I don't get the vibe from this place that people are all that tweaked about a BS.

My biggest complaint about the reputation system was that it reduced discussions to a handful of posts quoted over four pages with ZOMGHIFIVE!!!!@@@ being the only thing contributed.  And then you have your stalkers and douchebags, but that's another post.

Your premise is correct. However, they have also been used to run a sort of "popularity contest" or plain out abused because someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I might agree with bringing them back were they used only to rate a post. No, there are board members that simply abuse the intent of the add in feature.

Yeah, I am with Chris.  A H5 is an effective way to note that you appreciate someone's post, rather than having to respond with "hey! I liked what you said."  Which just deviates from the subject matter being discussed.  I find several posts worthy, due to content, or just that they made me laugh, and I would like to be able to give credit for that, without junking up the works.

I liked the feature too but it did get abused and caused more trouble than it was worth. I think we could consider reinstating it if done a bit differently.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Being the limp-wristed ***** that I am (  :rotf: ), the H5/BS thing tends to be abused by a minority of folk, but it's still abused.

If the H5/BS system is brought back, I'd like to see suspensions and even outright bannings for those who have the propensity to abuse it.  :evillaugh:

If that's unacceptable, then I'd suggest just leaving the damned thing out of the whole equation.

If you like somebody's post, there's nothing wrong with a verbal H5. POST THE FREAKIN' COMMENT. If you don't like somebody's post, do the same. "Clutter" is going to happen on a discussion board. I'm a member on a golden retriever message board and the freakin' Nazi who runs that has a coronary every time somebody poses a question that had been answered back in 1997.

To me, having a tool that "rates" somebody's post is limp-wristed all by itself.

Pussies.

Eupher, that would be OK were there a way to track who is handing out the BS/ H5s, but the software doesn't allow for that, at least not that I know of.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but EVERYBODY knows who bitch slaps just for the purpose of administering a bitch slap.  :evillaugh:

See? We invest more energy in trying to figure out the BS/H5 thing than just focusing on the comments, learning a bit, and having some fun in the process.   :-)

I always thought they were kind of meaningless.  A lot of us here have known each other on various boards for quite some time.  We already have a pre-conceived notion of whose posts we want to read and rarely, those who we choose to ignore.  I don't know if it really helped the relative newbies to the board.  I guess it was more of just a popularity contest, which is fine in and of itself.  Bottom line, I just don't think it adds or subtracts to the enjoyment of hanging out here or the betterment of the cave in general.

Just my 2 cents...

I guess as far as the stalkers /trolls are concerned couldn't we set a post limit they have to reach before they can use that feature?
