Quote
Still, Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa and member of the Judiciary Committee, noted that Democrats had used a filibuster to block the confirmation of Miguel Estrada, a Washington lawyer nominated by Mr. Bush to be the first Hispanic on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Senate Democrats who considered Mr. Estrada too conservative blocked his nomination after he refused to answer questions about his judicial philosophy at his confirmation hearing.

Mr. Grassley said that since Democrats had not paid a price among Hispanic groups for opposing Mr. Estrada, Republicans should not be held to a different standard if they opposed Judge Sotomayor.

“I get back to this: if it makes a difference for Republicans to vote against Sotomayor because it might cause us some problems with the Hispanic community, then the Hispanic community has a double standard,” Mr. Grassley said. “How can any politician deal with double standards? You can never win. All I am asking people is to be intellectually honest.”

The GOP needs to think long and hard. Either they want to keep appeasing people with no principles by abandoning their own principles only to have those people wake-up in the morning, put their clothes on and walk out without even a phone call later or they can piss off their base that has endured their philandering ways once and for all.

I see no reason to seek the approval of anyone so tiny minded as to base their loyalties on race. In fact, I find it down right offensive. What next? Are they gonna go for the stormfront.com vote? To hell with any hispanic--or anyone else--that votes on race. They need to grow-the-hell-up and maybe you'll be smart enough to join MY party where we vote based on reasoned principles and time-tested standards.

Ditto and party big-wigs that would cater to such juvenile bigots. Actually, juvenile is a bad term...my bunnlets are juveniles and they're too smart to judge people by their race.

There is a battle being waged for the soul of the GOP. Unfortunately, many in leadership positions seem willing to sell out in the name of appeasement and to not seem racist.  I would not care if Ms. Sotomayor was named Mr. Smith, it's the political views that determine qualifications for the USSC.  If the republican members in the senate can not see that, and get that point across as to why they are blocking her, then they are worthless.

Hit her on record of reversals by the USSC, near 60% is not a good record. Do not be afraid to call the dimrats out if they claim racism, they do that too often.  In the past all the Dimrats had to do was whisper about the racism, and the republicans would back down. It's sickening, and it degrades valid claims that happen.

A judge should a least be right on the law sometimes.

So young, so naive.

Let's turn this around.  If conservatives are against Sotomayor because of her race instead of her political ideas, why were not the conservatives against Miguel Estrada, Condoleeza Rice, and Clarence Thomas because of their races and in spite of their political ideas?

Also to ponder:  Why were liberals against Miguel Estrada, Condoleeza Rice, and Clarence Thomas because of both their political ideas and their race but no one wants to call liberals racists?

If the GOP doesn't man up and oppose this nominee, then they haven't yet learned their lessons from the 06 and 08 elections.  Meaning they will run a huge risk of losing even more seats in 2010 and keeping Obama for another 4 in 2012.

You can't piss off the base and expect to win an election.

You can't try to appease the liberals and actually expect them to vote for you if you have an (R) behind your name on the ballot.

Even a DUmmie can understand that.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." --Norman Thomas, 1944

If the GOP doesn't man up...

"Man-up?"

Don't be sexist.

Bitches hate that.
