About a week ago, some DU member (I don't remember their name) said that DU was at a crossroads. For most of the time that DU has been a website, the republicans controlled the White House. But now, since the democrats control both houses and the White House, we are in new territory. We must be able to speak openly about policy, or else we are no better than the sycophants who cheerled this country into the abyss.

It's clear to me that Nancy Pelosi is a liar. Not only is she a liar, but has been proven to have lied on past occasions. She has her own agenda and it doesn't include us. I don't know what it will take for many of the DUers here to "get it", but the mother****ing "D" next to her name doesn't mean a thing. If it means so much to the moderators and administrators here, then you all can help lead this country down the road to ruin, because that is exactly where we are headed under this current leadership. I won't be a part of it.


You can lock my threads. You can ban me from this site, but that won't change the fact that there are scum who are leading our party. There aren't enough of you who realize yet that it's just all one big happy family, one big party. The rest is all for show.

If being a democrat means abandoning my core beliefs, in favor of some "New World Order" idea, if the democratic party is no longer the party of the New Deal, if the Democratic Party is the party that is continually willing to compromise on the most sacred of American principles, for the sake of political expediency, THEN **** THE MOTHER****ING DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND ALL WHO STILL BUY INTO ITS BULLSHIT.

I don't take this lightly, at all. I have been a democrat, a strong democrat for over forty years, and I've got to tell you all it tears me up to feel this way, but it's been a long time coming. We need to get over party affiliation and come together to do the things that are right for this country, and not just what is good for the party.

If you want to follow the likes of Pelosi and Reid, if you want to buy into their bullshit, then be my guest. Maybe I was a bit naive, but I just naturally assumed that progressives were smart enough to figure this shit out. I refuse to play in a rigged game anymore.

I have to tell you all that, as a baby boomer, I'm thoroughly disappointed in the apathy of the younger generations. I guarantee you, had the crap that has gone on these last eight years gone on during the sixties and seventies, all hell would have broken loose. Not only did we give a damn, but we backed it up on the streets. We are a little long in the tooth now. We've fought the battles and are battle weary. I know I am tired of fighting, especially when it seems no one really cares enough to lay it on the line, like in the old days. The torch, the banner, or whatever you want to call it has fallen to you all, and you just don't care enough to back away from your ****ing Nintendos. We are too soft, as a nation. I see little hope.

I don't know what you all want out of life, and the truth is that I don't care anymore. I want some peace, and so my family and I are making our own little world. Since not enough people in this country seem to care enough to bring about the kind of change we really need, then the United States can go straight to hell. We will get the kind of government we deserve. I will just worry about my immediate family, and concentrate on making ourselves happy and comfortable in our own little corner of the country, and everyone else can be damned.

As for Democratic Underground,

It was once a very good idea, was unique and provided a great meeting ground for ideas and relevant information. Nowadays, if you're not on the bus, the bus will run over you. The bus has run over me. I'm nothing more than a grease spot here, inconsequential, misunderstood as a purist, and yet too unbending to accept what passes for legislation these days. When it gets to the point where we can't call our own leaders out on this site, then I say we are no different than Free Republic. Keep it up and DU will become extinct.

41. +1 We may agree with their issues, but at the end of the day
 Democrat politicians haven't any more integrity than Republicans. Vote for them, give money to them, volunteer for them--but never trust them. They're politicians, and they're in it for themselves first and foremost.

The primitives have been wanting Pelosi out for taking Chimpeachment off the table and this was their chance, but they wouldn't take it, which makes me question whether they really wanted her out or not.  It's like fighting an enemy and you want their leader to die, but you're upset that they shot themselves rather than you getting to shoot them.  What does it matter, they're dead, which is what you wanted.

21. I'm not sure quite where I come down on that postulate. 
 In my own case, I've been drinking some wine and splashing out on some chronic, so I certainly wouldn't wow 'em at the Oxford Debating Society. It's possible I've lowered my own IQ by tens of points, albeit (I hope) temporarily. Still and all, I think - or think I think - that the painfully juvenile aspects of the discussion here are no more pronounced than they were 6 years ago, or even during the horrors of the primaries (which were, well, horrible horrors).

What I think has increased exponentially here since January is a sweaty rhetorical embracing of the most ridiculous hyperbole in thread after thread, topic after topic. At least once a day I see some barbed exchange between two DUers I like, going at each other like mountain goats in rutting season. It's embarrassing to watch, frankly.

But there is a sort of mental impairment affecting DU post-Bush. All these rain-drenched bone-wearying years of the Bush Error, centrists and radicals, Southerners and Westerners and Northerners, yuppie and pauper, punk and hippie, square and hep, all came together here in defiance of a common and obvious enemy. Now a lot of people finally sense some daylight. For some here, they're delighted to feel the spring sun on their skin again, UV danger notwithstanding. For others, the few rays of light just beginning to peek into their window seemed tantalizing for a brief time, but are now a vexation because the way things are now is so very messed up that the fullness of noon cannot come soon enough.

And meanwhile, with the monstrous enemy we all united against beaten and determined to make itself a public laughingstock, though still behind-the-scenes busy and determined to destroy America, all people have here is to tongue-lash each other in increasingly insincere ballets of snark and scorn. It's beginning to seem as fake as pro wrestling.

There's a lot riding on Democrats being able now to unite and push the Admin and the Congress to the left. There hasn't been this good a chance at that in 30 years. Many of the most vehement arguments here are by and large meaningless. Organize and exert pressure, and keep on it, because a good presidency - and more important, a good democracy - can't happen without good citizens. In the meantime, I wish the purveyors on both sides of this issue would just dial it down. Stuff actually could be getting accomplished.

 I wrote a thread calling Pelosi a liar. Unlike most people, I do not have a hidden agenda. What I wrote is what you can believe, pertaining to how I feel. I think it is fairly explanatory.
