plans for Memorial Day?
« on: May 22, 2009, 07:33:51 PM »
What's everybody doing for the three-day weekend?

Anything special?

Me, as usual, I'm honoring the dead on the traditional day, May 30.

I'm working overtime on Monday.  No holiday for me.

That happens; I suspect I will be, too.

I do the books for a truck stop, and occasionally--about six times a year, maybe--I fill in for one of the cashiers.  Usually on or near holidays.  No big deal.  I dunno if it's on tap for this weekend, but it might be.

It's really weird, playing a clerk and being deaf.

This has nothing to do with deafness, but it was odd, about three years ago this summer.  A clerk's child got hurt in an accident, and the clerk had to leave.  The owner was out of town.  The manager was out of town.  So I said yeah, sure, I'd go in, even though it was near the middle of the night.

Circa 3:00 a.m., I was back in the kitchen smoking a cigarette, when I looked up front, and there was the top of a forehead of a human being sticking up from the counter in front of the cash-register.

Thinking it was a small child, I went over to the counter and looked down.

It was a female dwarf, very short but as wide as a barn door.

While I was contemplating this phenomenon, I noticed the truck stop had been invaded by.....dwarves.  There were all these dwarves, running around, racing around, jumping around, hands-over-heads around, spinning around, laughing and chortling.  There were nine of them.

All of these dwarves.

I never heard them come inside (naturally), and so it was understandably a shock to me.

All of these dwarves.

As it turned out, they had come up to this part of Nebraska to take part in some sort of clown festival that's a big deal around here.

All of these dwarves.

So many dwarves.

Same here... I'll be working, but luckily, I don't have to close that day.  Besides, I get 3 days off starting the Wednesday of that week, so I'll be heading home to hang out with my family, depending on whether or not my niece decides to arrive early...

On Monday I'll be thanking God I have a job to go back to on Tuesday.

I'll also be doing a cr*pload of yardwork over the weekend.

That's happened to me too, Frank.  Right after smoking a "cigarette" at 3:00 AM.

As you enjoy your 3 day weekend (for those that are getting one), remember to think about our current and fallen US veterans.  This holiday is intended to honor and remember them.

I could take Monday off...if I wanted to burn a vacation day.  As it is, I've used a couple days lately trying to recover from what I thought was a toothache, so I'll work the day.   :bawl:

Was there a guy in a big pointy hat, Frank? Maybe they've decided to film the Hobbit in Nebraska.

Surely you've heard of the clown festival held every year in Plainview, Nebraska (population 1500), northwest of Norfolk.  It's world-famous, clowns coming from all over the world to it.  "Festivals" aren't my thing, but I've always wondered how that started; all I know is that it's been around for a very long time.

That same night the dwarves tumbled into the truck stop, earlier, a state patrolman had come by, on his way back to the main office.  I asked him what had brought him way out there, as the place is located far from any place of human habitation.

He had been up to Plainview on this, the evening before the opening of that year's clown festival.  There had been about 40 clowns, all of them in clown attire, and from places as disparate as New York and California, soaking down the joy-juice at the local VFW club, and things had gotten, uh, a little out of hand.

All of these drunken clowns, fisticuffing, brawling, slugging it out.

The local police tried to control the fracas, but couldn't, and so called in the county sheriff and deputies to help.  This additional manpower wasn't enough to control the clowns, so ultimately they had to call in all Nebraska state patrolmen within a 100-mile radius, to come to their assistance.

It must have been quite a sight, all these clowns fighting.

Anybody who says "nothing ever happens" in small towns is a primitive.

Got my window shopping done (although I have no idea how I'm going to pull an engine and transmission out of a Buick Roadmaster by myself), got my new vehicle safely sequestered somewhere in Hendersonville, and I'm thinking about dinner... pizza or some sort of breakfast?  'The Hunt For Red October' is on TV tonight, so all is well around la casa.
Whatcha doin'?

Suffering without air conditioning, at the moment... all windows in the apartment are open and the fan is blowing directly in my face.

I tried to find a cheap hotel to stay at but nothing is available until tomorrow. :(

Saw a bright red 2010 Chevy Camaro today, with a young male driver (late 20's, is my guess).  I am thinking of stalking him.  :uhsure: J/k.

I knew I should have worn shorts today.  It got pretty hot here.  My Datsun doesn't have air conditioning... I had to sit around and wait for the wrecker to show up with my car; I almost considered opening the rear hatch to see if I could get a breeze moving in the other direction.

At least my new car has AC.  That was a pleasant surprise!

I'm confused.  Did you get an off-campus apartment or is this another dorm?  When did you switch apartments from your previous adventure with Sheniqua the Confused?

LOL! No, I moved to a summer apartment still on campus... Let's just say that the contract for building Compass Point, the current community I reside in, was awarded to the lowest bidder...shoddy work, indeed.   :bird:

I'll move back to University Terrace in the fall, as that is the one community they shut down in the summertime for "renovations."

it actually isn't. Despite the buildings being older, they are built so much better than the new communities... bedrooms are bigger, hardwood floors, air conditioning units rarely break down.  It's nestled among many trees, also, set away from the main drag of the campus.

I call Compass Point ghetto because of its shitty newer buildings with a/c that doesn't work half the time.  :hammer:

Goin' over to grandpa's grave for the flag and flowers deal. Then, firing up some baby back ribs in the smoker for dinner. Wish there were U.S. watermelons ready to go, but, I can only seem to find the Mexican ones.
