A friend's son graduates college next week and has a $65K job waiting
Edited on Tue May-19-09 11:33 PM by Stinky The Clown
Not sure exactly what his degree is, but it combines IT and marketing. He will be working for an aerospace company.

I'm not sure what to make of this. The company does government work and private sector work.

On edit and to clarify: Many snarked "what's to 'make' of it?"

1. Crap economy with poor prospects for lots of grads.
2. The industry that's hiring.
3. The size of the salary.

I've known the kid for a while. He's a good, decent kid. Hardworking. I'm glad for him. When his Dad told me this, Dad sounded less than enthusiastic. I didn't question. I know Dad (a former Marine) is one of the most anti-war people I ever met.
A suit with no pantz is just a sportzjacket. I'm wearing a sportzjacket.  Funny? How am I funny? Do I look like a clown to you?

Only on DU is it a bad thing to have a good paying job out of College! :whatever:http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5687353

Hmmm.

For some reason, it seems to me the sparkling husband primitive was hitting the vino rather hard, when posting this last night.

I'm not sure why; the "texture" of his language suggests some pretty serious sloshing-down.

Does this mean that the graduate is working for a major defense contractor, and the anti-war dad is pissed because the son is making more than he is? :fuelfire:

Frank--LOL

Why the hell is this controversial?  I'm happy as hell for the kid.  I think Rushmore is correct, and my theory is that he seemed too "righty" to suit the DU's tastes.  No yearning to take a year trekking Europe in Birkenstocks to "find oneself."   No "victim of Bush's economy" to wring ones hands over and bitch about on DU.

No, he's bright, self-sufficient, a go-getter, and works hard.  This is just too republican.  I say:  Go get 'em, Tiger.

Well, the sparking husband primitive's not supposed to be drinking like that.

Given his cardiac history and that he's under orders to lose a fraction of a tonnage of weight, and his old age, the sparkling husband primitive's got to be careful about what he consumes.

Now I'm starting to suspect his wife has a hand in this, so as to get the life-insurance proceeds sooner.

Damn.

See what happens when one attains a science degree.  When you major in womens studies, black studies, orany multitude of useless degrees unemployment or low wages are your rewards.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

You have to go to college to start at $65,000? Have they not heard of car assembly lines?

LOL, Scuba.  My moonbat stepson majored in sociology (I had no hand in this.)  This qualifies him to say "You folks ready to order?"    I do have to give him credit, though.  He sponges exactly zero from his parents.

It's not his fault. This little DUmmy is way too hard on himself. Before Bush, most major companies had a philosophy department. They were always on the lookout for bright young philosophers. Now, because of Bush, an entry-level philosopher has a much more difficult job search.

After landing a job, a beginning philosopher can have a difficult time finding opportunities for advancement. Very few CEO's began their careers in the philosophy department, even in good times. In the interest of future financial success, an aspiring philosopher would be well advised to set aside his dream of expounding on truth and justice for cash, and instead concentrate his studies on more commercial pursuits, like African-American studies, art history, or medieval French literature. Even then, homelessness is a very likely outcome.

It is clearly Bush's fault that liberal arts degrees (i.e., courses of studies without those pesky math subjects) are near worthless on the job market.

But....but....but DUmmies excel in DUmmie math. You know, 2+2 = half your check for me.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

I get the same vibe, Frank. I think it's those choppy sentences.
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

See this just puzzles me. How can a parent let ideology trump their children? The kid is decent & hardworking but daddy (and let's be sure to mention he's a former Marine to give him street cred for his opinion) is dubious about his son's new job because he's anti-war? Would daddy rather he turn down the job and sponge off of mom and pop until Moveon.org has an opening for a Marketing Engineer?

Yup. I'll admit it, I'm a Poli Sci major and a Philosophy minor. But I was smart enough to get into a legal studies program to (at least) qualify me for a job as a paralegal or even go to law school (though the likelihood of that is nil). Fast growing industry and plenty of internships to land a job even before I graduate. Or there's always grad school, with my veteran's benefits, or back into the service.

I studied history, and I got a job as Paralegal shortly after graduation.  All hope is not lost for liberal studies majors ;)  And the French minor that people said was so useless is now earning me an extra $100 a month in translations :-)

And hey, if it doesn't work, I plan on going into Texas A&M's Poli Sci PhD program so I can teach at the college level. You just have to be think about what you want to do, rather than go to school just for the piece of paper.

My daughter will be 21 in Oct. She has two kids already, been married 3 1/2 yrs, and is in her 2nd yr of college. I told her to go to school to be a dental hygienist or something like that, then after she gets the kids in school she can either go back to school, or start work right away, and go to school again later. This way she has a way to make money right away. Pharm techs, dental work, etc always seem to have opportunities.
There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as caring and sensitive because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he is willing to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he will do good with his own money— if a gun is held to his head.

Dental hygienists make great money in my neck of the woods.

I know a couple pharm techs, they seem to do ok.
