Democrats won't fund Guantanamo closing for now
« on: May 19, 2009, 04:43:02 PM »

In this photo taken Tuesday, May 12, 2009 and reviewed by the U.S. military, a U.S. trooper guards a door at Camp 6 detention facility, inside Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base, Cuba. (AP Photo/Brennan Linsley)
"WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's allies in the Senate will not provide funds to close the Guantanamo Bay prison until the administration comes up with a satisfactory plan for transferring the detainees held there, top Democrats said Tuesday.
And in a further break with Obama, the Senate's top Democrat said he opposes transferring any Guantanamo prisoners to the United States for their trials or to serve their sentences. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said 50 to 100 Guantanamo detainees may be transferred to U.S. facilities.
"I can't make it any more clear," Reid said. "We will never allow terrorists to be released in the United States."
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said Obama's plan to close Guantanamo is not dead — only that the funding will have to wait until the administration devises an acceptable plan to handle the closure and transfer the detainees. Obama has promised to close the military prison by January.
"The administration has not come up with a plan at this point," said Durbin, who is the whip, or No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. He added that Democrats are likely to address the issue on later legislation. "I think Guantanamo should be closed and we have to wait for the president's direction on what happens to the detainees." WHAT?  I thought those were all innocent and misunderstood farmers and goatherders being detained at GitMo, not dangerous terrorists. What gives?

The Repubs will have plenty of ammo in the mid term elections. Hoping that they put up some quality conservatives rather than wimpy ass RINO's.

Here's how that will go down.

Obama, "I can't close Gitmo, congress won't give me the $80 million I need. I know I've pissed away $1,300,000,000,000 but I couldn't help it. It's all Bush's fault."

Congress, "We can't give Obama the funds until we know what he's going to do with the prisoners. It's all Bush's fault."

So they both go out and blame each other and claim it's Bush's fault, the DUmmies forget and forgive and vote'em back into office anyway.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Why do we bother to close Gitmo?  :mental:

If the dems keep Obama from fulfilling his first ever executive order they will undermine him and make him look like a fool.

well, until it's rescinded (fat chance of that) the military will go through the motions of closing it.  They have to, it's a legal ORDER from the CINC.  So, I'm looking forward to the deadline day approaching with no resolution and the guards walking out of the fence, locking the gate, and leaving the poor little terrorists locked inside, saying "We were ordered to close up, and we did."

Dear Leader is supposed to be giving a speech very shortly on GitMo.  Correspondingly, the DJIA is already down 100+ poits this morning.

I expect he will push the "evil Boosh" canard to its hilt in an effort to embarrass the dems into not embarrassing him.

I predict his self-image (read: ego) will be his single greatest motivating factor.

You were correct about blaming *.  We wouldn't be facing the problem of closing GitMo if * had never opened it. Of course he didn't offer any alternatives to it even after the fact. 0Bama is still pushing for the terrorists to be held in supermax prisons in the US.

There is going  to be a shitstorm about this.  Let's see, we bring the detainees here to be tried, some will surely be found innocent, then what?  There is no place for them to go , except to be released back on the street.

Why not ? - I've seen this all before. Massachusetts house and senate has pulled the rug out from under Obama V1.1 beta more times than I can count. Unless Gov. Patrick gets called up into an Obama cabinet position, he is dead in the water.

McLame was on Greta last night talking about torture and waterboarding and how he's for Guantanamo closing...Why can't he and his daughter just disappear from politics already?  I regret voting for him....

Yes but he should STFU. He wants to sound relevant;most conservatives want him to go hide.

I was mostly voting for Palin, but contributed to the campaign.  Not only do I wish I had my money back, but the donation (as I knew it would, silly me) put the RNC back onto my trail.  I don't know what part of    hanging-up-in-your-ear they don't understand.
