I placed the excerpt below so that those who don't want their Sunday evening defined by this don't have to see it on the main page.

_____________ start article ________________

BERLIN - A GERMAN worker was boiled alive in an empty industrial-sized soup vat while trying to clean it, tabloid newspaper Bild reported on Sunday.

The 36-year-old, named only as Markus, was scrubbing the 2m-high pot when the lid accidentally closed, automatically starting the jets of boiling water used to disinfect vegetables. 'For reasons we have still not cleared up, the disinfection process started too soon,' a police spokesman told the paper. By the time the unfortunate worker was found, he was already dead, Bild reported.

The factory in Luebeck in northern Germany, which employs around 200 people, has been 'provisionally closed,' according to its owners, Erasco - a subsidiary of US soup-maker Campbell's. -- AFP

_____________ end article ________________

Subsidiary of Campbell's soup.

When Union safety issues and other benefits of Unions are dismissed as frivolous, incidents like this remind us of the importance that safety has on individual workers' lives. So horrid and unbelievable that this could happen in today's world - with technology we have before us.

Surprisingly good comedy coming, then back to normal

1. So you're saying we should avoid Campbell's German Potato Soup for a while...

7. This is why unions are important. Unions are the single greatest

guarantee we have that workers will have safe work environments and that safety regulations will be followed.

If only some safety regulations were in place to prevent this death... :(

Automation is always seen as a good thing, and often it is, but when you rush to take human judgment out of every possible situation it's sometimes an invitation for accidents and problems.

I hope his death was so quick that he didn't suffer much. What a horrible situation. :(

Yes, the only way to prevent freak accidents is to pay monthly dues to a group that will build a golf course and a private club that its members can't use.

33. Are you really sure this is an accident?

I have my doubts.

More than likely the idiot was in too much of a hurry to follow proper tagout and lockout procedures. Most if not all companies, even in Europe have safety standards to be followed.

Imagine how unlucky and stupid the worker had to be to get killed on the job in the DUmmy labor nirvana of Europe.

DUmmies, go look up accident records of Union facilities......

I was gonna say, in Europe he's more likely than not a union member already.  I agree with thundley--lockout/tagout--it is your friend.

There's no place in the story that indicates the business isn't a union shop, yet because this primitive says "When Union safety issues and other benefits of Unions are dismissed as frivolous, incidents like this remind us of the importance that safety has on individual workers' lives," the idiots naturally assume the place isn't unionized.

Honestly, they can't read.

Of all the things that might have contributed to the situation, I find it preposterous that ol' ThomCat could be so ignorant as to think that in Germany a LACK of trade union protection or safety regulations could play any role whatsoever in this.  It's frickin' GERMANY fer cryin' out loud!  Odds are 10-1 there were clear safety rules in place involving physical blocks and checks to prevent this sort of thing, and the worker himself shortcutted them and ended up paying the price.
