Tony Kornheiser stepped down Monday after three seasons as a commentator on ESPN's "Monday Night Football," where he will be replaced by former Raiders and Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.

Kornheiser cited the grind of the travel schedule, which from the start has been his biggest complaint about the job. He has an intense fear of flying and tried to avoid doing so whenever possible.

Only six of ESPN's regular-season games in 2009 are scheduled for the Eastern Time Zone (Kornheiser lives in Washington, D.C.), and there are games in Oakland, San Diego, Denver and San Francisco.

"When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would've frequently moved me from the bus to the air," he said in a quote provided by ESPN.

Thank GOD for this.  He was unlistenable.  Why did ESPN think that it would be a good idea to hire a Canadian who looks like he hasn't lifted anything heavier than a Molson in 20 years would captivate football audiences?

Kornheiser isn't Canadian, he's from Long Island.

I didn't mind his schtick that much.  I don't know who the perfect replacement would have been, but Gruden won't be there for long.  He's still young and will head back to coaching at some point.

Oh well.  For some reason I thought he was originally from Canada.  My bad.

Either way, he was unlistenable to me, as are about 90 percent of the gang since Cosell, Meredith, and Gifford (Al Michaels being the very notable exception to the "unlistenable" crowd.)

A day of rejoicing for sports fans. MNF has had some awful announcers over the years: Theismann, O.J., Dennis Miller, and the legendary Fred Williamson come to mind, but Kornheiser is the only one who forced me to watch the games on "mute". He's okay on PTI, but incredibly, painfully bad on MNF.

Anyone would be an upgrade.

MNF took a big hit IMHO when it left ABC. (dumbest move ever) Sunday Night Football tends to have the better match ups now anyway but I really miss the MNF tradition.

Glad Kornhoser is gone though. (yeah, I also thought he was Canadian, lol) Chucky will be a nice stop-gap for a year or two until he finds a coaching gig he wants. I also agree that Tony is fine on PTI but blew balls every Monday night. Every single game he would go on a rant (or three) about something that was wholly unrelated to the game on the field. No one could stop the yammering baboon or would even try.

Good luck Gruden. MNF's "football IQ" just went up 200 points.  :-)

Thank God.
I nearly destroyed my TV last year throwing things when he would launch into a 20 minute Brett Favre rant during every single game, whether or not there was any iota of a reason to do so.  The prospect of an encore of that sorry performance would be enough to drive me to watching the NBA.

Oddly enough, I agree that he's bearable on PTI, if only because he makes such an inviting pinata for Wilbon.
