Man Who Only Wanted A Free Bacon Sandwich Buys Russian Fighter Jet At Auction

FOR most men the thought of owning a jet fighter is merely a flight of fancy but for Richard Williams, the chance to join the jet set proved irresistible.

Despite attending an auction only because his mother Diana was in charge of the catering and promised him a free bacon sandwich, he ended up spending thousands on an L29 Delfin fighter used to train Russian pilots at the height of the Cold War.

Richard, who runs his own business restoring classic Minis, said: “It’s every boy’s dream to own their very own fighter plane but I didn’t even know anything about the auction until 20 minutes before it was due to start.

The Sixties jet, which is still in working order and comes with a full service history, had to be dismantled and reassembled again on the front lawn of the family home in Market Drayton, Shropshire, where it now takes pride of place.

It was last flown 11 years ago by the Czech and Russian air forces to train MIG fighter pilots. About 3,600 were made before production ceased in 1974.
