Screw that! The vet doesn't know your dog or how much of a Friend he/she is. I have found over the years, a .22 behind the ear is much more humane. It's tough as hell to do, but the dog dies in surroundings it is familiar with and it's instantaneous.
I've known people to do that also, out on the farm.
Some people live in the city, and it's hard to shoot a dog in the front yard.

Unless you are taking your dying dog to a hospice for pets, where there will be plenty of drugs to ease the suffering, something needs to be done.
I doubt the DUmmy ever took the dog to the vet in the first place.
But at least I know, 100% of the dying animals on DU have died in someone's arms....

If the truth would be known, we might find out the dog actually starved to death.
