Moscow police violently break up gay pride rally

MOSCOW - Moscow police violently dispersed a gay pride rally Saturday that was banned by city authorities, drawing attention to Russia's record on gay rights as it prepares to host a major international pop music competition.

About 30 activists gathered near a university in southwestern Moscow to protest discrimination against gays and lesbians in Russia.

The group, which included British gay rights advocate Peter Tatchell, waved flags and chanted slogans, including: "Homophobia is a disgrace of this country!" and "We are demanding equal rights!"

Hauled away
After about a minute, riot police charged into the group and began to grab protesters, dragging them to waiting buses. Tatchell was talking with reporters when police started to haul him away. "This shows the Russian people are not free," he said.

You can guess what's coming



Boy, this really takes me back to all the gay pride rallies that were...um...NEVER busted up here, at all. Still:

     Yeah, it's so oppressive to be gay in the United States. It's not like you have, oh, 99.9% of all celebrities endorsing your lifestyle. It's not as if there are gay pride parades in every city of consequence in the United States. It's not as if, for the low, low price of moving to New England or Iowa you practically have statues erected in your honor (and in your butts, too, I suppose). It's not like your lifestyle is exalted on every television show, including ones for kids. It's not like anyone who dares to publicly disagree with one shred of your agenda and lifestyle gets excoriated and immolated in the national press.

     God, I liked you guys so much better when all you wanted were leather chaps and bathhouses. It would SO be worth an AIDS vaccine just to have you people fade back into your furtive existence in every arts district of every major city. Until then, I guess I'll be seeing you in your pink feather boas on the news after every gay pride parade.

This Peter Tatchell character was on BBC before the march clearly desiring, if not demanding, to be arrested or worse.  It was literally like he was daring groups like the Russian Youth to come beat the hell out of him.  I dare say he would have enjoyed it.  The Moscow police had told them that they could not protest at the Eurovision song festival.
