The Senate last night stripped  Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) of his seniority on committees, a week after the 29-year veteran of the chamber quit the Republican Party to join the Democrats.

In announcing his move across the aisle last week, Specter asserted that  Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) had assured him he would retain his seniority in the Senate and on the five committees on which he serves. Specter's tenure ranked him ahead of all but seven Democrats.

Instead, though, on a voice vote last night, the Senate approved a resolution that made Specter the most junior Democrat on four committees for the remainder of this Congress. (He will rank second from last on the fifth, the Special Committee on Aging.) Reid himself read the resolution on the Senate floor, underscoring the reversal.

...
Specter's office declined to comment.

The loss of seniority could prove costly to Specter in his campaign to win reelection in 2010, denying him the ability to distinguish himself from a newcomer in his ability to claim key positions.

Specter trusted Harry Reid...ah, they do deserve each other...and it looks like PA is going to free of him for good come 2010.

Reid betrayed Specter. Reid lied? Say it ain't so! Surely, Reid knew in advance how his fellow Dems would feel about Specter leapfrogging over them in seniority.

Well, the good news is that maybe Specter will be inclined to stick it to the Democrats on some key vote in the future. And after he wins the PA Democratic primary, he may feel the need to pick up some Republican support in PA, by voting our way. So, a net plus for us, I would think.

Reid and Specter deserve each other.  Specter's reason for switching parties was that he "wasn't going to have his career decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary".

He might face some primary heat from a moderate Dem. named Joe Sestak. He's a Delaware County (suburban Philly) guy who might bloody him up a little. Sestak is a former Admiral.

Hopefully it will be fully rewarded when he loses reelection since he no longer has the committee seniority to prop him up.

Once again, the long knives of the left have come out. This time, I can not think of a person more deserving of the knife to the back than Specter.

Sestak may even deliver a knock out blow. Hey Specter, how's it going to feel to have your career in the hands of the Democrat primary voters? LOL

Hot Air's Ed Morrissey also agree's with splash...

Quote
Democrats sent a more practical message with this vote.  Specter needed to retain his seniority in order to make the argument that electing him would keep Pennsylvania in a position of power in Congress.  The caucus has made it much easier for a Democratic primary challenger to beat Specter by taking that advantage away from him.  It’s practically a signal flare to Joe Sestak, approving of his run against Specter.

Ed also notes that Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins may now have second thoughts about following Specter down that road. Specter got used, abused and is on his way to the ash heap of history. Bye bye (in 2010) to the indistinguished gentleman from Pennsylvania.

"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed."

Could have retired gracefully as an honored elder statesman.  Instead, thanks to his craving to remain in power, he departs the stage as a failed clown.

True, but that doesn't make him any less of a clown.  This is the same guy who sucks up to CAIR and got fired by the incoming CNO (Mullen) less than 24 hours after he took over as CNO.

Arlan, after all these years does not understand the dem leadership mind. They HATE and despise turncoats. ESPECIALLY the ones THEY turn! This is just the FIRST STEP. Arlan WILL be primaried no matter what Reid told him. Reid will shrug and tell Arlan it is not the LEADERSHIP but the "rank and file" dems who are primarying him. Then decline to endorse ANYONE, same as damning Arlan. Arlan loses, goes home in shame with a name no one will invoke except derogatorily, as in Benedict Arnold.

It is pretty god damned sad that a man who has been in office for four DECADES didn't fully grasp how seniority works
