Regarding Ebay: Can buyers who don't pay or respond to messages leave negative feedback?

10 days ago, a new Ebayer (member since Jan. 01, 2009) with no feedback history won an item I put up for auction on Ebay. The buyer has not responded to the invoice, to any of my messages, or to the Unpaid Item Case I opened 8 days after the end of the auction. If I eventually close the case by reporting the item as unpaid do I leave myself vunerable to negative feedback from this ghost buyer should he or she materialize at some point in the future?

I tried finding an answer to my question at Ebay help pages but they are vague in regard to how much power unresponsive buyers have.

If it's our nocturnally foul one, I'm wondering if he was trying to sell his basement steps.

1. Apparently they'll remove it if the deadbeat leaves it.

Feedback (ratings and comments) may be removed in the following instances:

There is a violation of the Feedback Abuse policy.

A member is unable to form a legally binding contract at the time the item ended or Feedback was left.

A member provided eBay with an email address that is invalid and could not be contacted at the time of the transaction.

A member mistakenly leaves negative or neutral Feedback intended for another member, informs eBay of the error and has already placed the same Feedback for the correct member.

If a member is suspended by eBay, negative & neutral Feedback left by that member is removed. If a member is suspended within 90 days of registration, all Feedback is removed.

eBay is provided with a valid court order requesting Feedback Removal.

A buyer fails to respond to the Unpaid Item process.

When the communication and comments left by the buyer within the Unpaid Item Dispute Console undermine the integrity of both the Unpaid Item process and the eBay Feedback system.

2. I just came back to selling on eBay afte being away for several years.

Last time, we sold for maybe 2 1/2 years, had 1 non-pay/non-responder in all that time.

I am in my 3rd batch of items on sale now, and I have already had 2 non-payers, and eBay has made it a pain in the ass to deal with them.

The eBay big shots have made it much more difficult to sell there, and I don't understand why - they seem to be taking much more money than tey used to.

Do others have this experience too, or is it just me?

ADDED: I am selling as oldmark47 if you want to see my small list for this week - mostly books.

I spent my day at work trying not to laugh on the phone while I was reading stuff like this.  It didn't work.

Good to see you back, sir, but really you have to do something about those stairs leading to your basement.

I've always been under the impression New Jersey, being a blue state, is heavily overregulated, especially on matters involving private property.

It's not your fault, of course--I'm assuming you yourself didn't build your house--but man, don't the Democrat bureaucrats in New Jersey have codes and regulations and rules regarding sheer ugliness?

I can answer this one, but not with any recent experience. People who don't pay can leave negative feedback(or they could in the past since they are technically the winner and that allows them the ability to post feedback). At one time they could and you could retort back, but it was always a my word against his word thing(I always hated that about ebay). I had one deadbeat one time that did this and was verbally abusive in private when you just followed up with them. Apparently there was a trend to how this individual worked when they had buyer's remorse. It took many complaints from other sellers(and some of their buyers) and about 2 years before they finally shut the individual down. There are indeed some real headcases out there who I think get off on playing games. So can't give the night owl any crap for it. Don't know if it has changed so that you can get the auctioned scrapped alltogether so they lose the ability to give feedback when they have been a deadbeat and are just looking to get you back for calling them on it, but that's how it was at one time. Only person I ever had a problem with for the little bit of selling I did on there. And out of about 400 or so feedbacks, that was my only negative.

I'm guessing that the thinking behind the Ebay policy letting buyers leave feedback even if they don't pay for an item is to discourage unethical sellers from cancelling sales when they don't get the price they want?

I had the same exprience, only had one buyer that left me bad feedback and if I would of been more pro-active I would of had it removed. She wanted to negotiate the posted shipping charges after the end of auction, letting me know what she was willing to pay. LOL. I relisted the item and sold it for even more then her winning bid. She claimed to "work at the post office" and "knew what it should cost"  :rotf:  I wonder what her DU name was?  :rotf: :rotf:

I've saved alot of money by buying things off eBay and made some money selling. It does seem like Ebay changes the feedback rules often. Last fall on "Black Friday" I used microsoft live search to earn an extra 30% on a couple pretty expensive items. I saved over $150 on a brand new Edenpure space heater (all you really need in the winter here) it really helped my electric bills also.
