What movie/s freaked you out as a kid
« on: April 23, 2009, 08:58:51 PM »
Hat tip to Celtic Rose for the thread idea.  :cheersmate:

What was the movie or movies that really freaked you out as a kid? Have you or would you watch them again and/or show them to your own kids?

I can think of a few that disturbed me like The Never Ending Story and Timebandits but the biggest, harshest freakout movie for me just had to be Jaws. Jaws scared the shite out of me for a whole summer and that's saying something considering I lived in Oklahoma at the time.  :lmao:

Yeah, well, those OKie sharks are the worst...   :lmao:

I don't remember the name of the movie that scared me to death, but it had a T Rex or something running after a couple, trying to eat them.  I had nightmares about dinosaurs chasing me for weeks.   :-)

Mario Bava's Black Sabbath, The Drop of Water segment, the rest wasn't that scary.

The Exorcist.
That one and It's Alive scared the crap out of me without ever seeing them.  Just the advertisements alone were enough.  Alien too, come to think of it.

The 1970's had all kinds of scary movie ads although when I did see some of the movies years later they weren't very good, like The Town that Dreaded Sundown seemed not as good as the advertisement.

Salem's Lot and The Exorcist.  They still scare the crap out of me.

My daughter has been traumatized ever since she first laid eyes on E.T.  She was 3 and now at almost 11 she is still terrified of that alien freak.
All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.

I absolutely hated E.T., and your daughter is right... it was creepy as ****.  And there were the other parts of the movie that disturbed me.  Teenagers living at home that randomly ordered pizza that Mom automaticaly paid for?  Was this part of the movie?  It was incomprehensible to my 8-year-old mind.   And that kid Elliot that left the house to wander around after dark?  I would have been beaten within an inch of my life if I had left the house after dark when I was supposed to be in bed.

"Black Sunday" (not the one about football)
"Strait-Jacket"
"Die, Die, My Darling"
"Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte"
"Jason And The Argonauts"

There are more, but I can't remember the titles from the silent era.

I remember picture books used to be a big thing (about the same time I still had a ViewMaster)... I had a book for 'Jason and the Argonauts'.  I had no idea what the story was, only that it was a bunch of creepy skeletons trying to take over a ship of whatever Argonauts were.  I had one for 'Return of the Jedi' and another for 'Indiana Jones'.

HaHa! "Salem's Lot" was the one that did it for my oldest son.  I'll never forget the night I kicked open his bedroom door and shoved a rolling trunk into his room.

Also, I had a cap that looked a lot like a chauffeur's cap.  I'd put it on and flash him that creepy smile.

I was a wonderful dad.   :-)

It was the special effects in 'Jason' which rattled my little brain.  The skeletons were the worst.  It all looks so cheesy today.

Poltergeist still scares the crap out of me to this day, and not just because of the "curse".

Now imagine, if you will:

Sitting alone in a dark house on Halloween, watching The Shining, when for no apparent reason a picture falls off the wall behind me and drops to the floor.  Never again.  NEVER AGAIN.

When I was real litlle, the flying monkeys in Wizard of OZ scared the crap outta me.   When I got older, pretty much anything in the horror genre....still don't like them.

My daughter, wierdo...the singing alligator/croc in All Dogs Go to Heaven gave her nightmares for weeks.  And when she was 3 ish, she had nightmare whenever we went to the zoo.

Maybe I was an insensitive little prick as a kid, but hearing how my parents were freaked out watching Snow White and the witch...meh.  Maybe back in the day I could see how they'd be freaked by it.

What was the movie or movies that really freaked you out as a kid? Have you or would you watch them again and/or show them to your own kids?

"The Legend of Boggy Creek"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Boggy_Creek

Came out in late 1972 when I was 11.  Thing freaked me out.  Of course, this was around the same time the Big Foot stuff was in high gear.

I caught it on late night TV probably 25 years ago and watched it again.  I ended up laughing more than anything else.  Doubt kids would even want to watch it since its not Star Wars or Spiderman.

I don't watch "horror" movies, like the Jason, Freddy or those type movies.

But I saw Alfred Hitchcock's movie "The Birds" on tv, can't even remember how old I was, but I don't like birds and every time I see a flock of crows...it reminds me of that movie and creeps me out.

Saw Jaws the summer after my sophmore year of college on my way to spend the summer in Maine, where I taught swimming and lifeguarded. I have never liked swimming in the ocean since! :o

Two films really bothered me. Ring of Bright Water made me cry for days, as did a PBS film, Tiger.

Can't remember the name of it as I was quite young.  My parents had to drag me along to the drive in to see a horror flick thinking I'd just fall asleep in the back seat.  It was something to do with nuns in a boat and they all turned to bones!  It was horrifying to a 5 yo.  I dreamed about it for years afterwards.

One of my favorite freak me out movies.  What really freaked me out in the movie was Talos.

I have the movie on DVD and I still get goosebumps when Talos turns his head and looks down

at Hercules and Hylas.

Phantasm.  I wouldn't go near a mirror at night for weeks.
