 Pollution 'fights global warming'

Air pollution may be helping the fight against global warming by enhancing the ability of plants to absorb carbon dioxide, scientists say.

Since the 1960s, increased levels of atmospheric pollution have enhanced plant productivity by as much as one quarter, research has found.

In terms of carbon dioxide, this means that an extra 10% has been stored in the soil.

The research was published in the scientific journal, Nature.

It is a common assumption that plants grow best in clear sunny weather, but scientists say this is not always the case.

Research has shown that forests and crops can also thrive in hazy conditions because clouds and particles in the atmosphere scatter sun light so that it bathes more leaves.

That enhances photosynthesis, the process by which plants turn light and carbon dioxide into food.

We must destroy the earth to save it because only after a concerted effort to deliberately destroy the planet and failing will certain of us self-centered humans realize the planet can take care of itself.  As for getting "unaddicted" to oil, we should buy gas guzzlers and drive everywhere for no reason until there is no oil left (which I believe the earth makes her own oil but that is beside the point) because only when an energy source as economical as oil is depleted will any other alternative make any sense.  Then I hope it is the Mr. Fusion from Back to the Future and not something that doesn't work when it is cloudy, like solar panels.

Rush replayed the time that Charlton Heston came on the show to read from Michael Cricghton's Jurassic Park about the time in earth's history when plants were destroying the planet by producing too much of their waste product which we all breath today.  The earth, not having a political agenda, simply took care of it as did life that wanted to survive.

Which brings us to this quote from Brundle Fly:

Seth Brundle: You have to leave now, and never come back here. Have you ever heard of insect politics? Neither have I. Insects... don't have politics. They're very... brutal. No compassion, no compromise. We can't trust the insect. I'd like to become the first... insect politician. Y'see, I'd like to, but... I'm afraid, uh...
Ronnie: I don't know what you're trying to say.
Seth Brundle: I'm saying... I'm saying I - I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake.
Ronnie: No. no, Seth...
Seth Brundle: I'm saying... I'll hurt you if you stay.

Although I would say knowing the insect doesn't have politics make them far more honest than many humans.  What we can't trust is an insect pushing an agenda.
