Friend's fundy husband convinced her she doesn't need to take to take anti-depressants (read on)

OK, I have to vent about this...

I received an email from "Sally" last week (she and I grew up together; went to the same elementary through high schools), but I haven't seen her in years and I receive an occasional email from her (usually when something's wrong or she has news; whatever).

She emailed me, as she said she's been really depressed, has been yelling at her kids and her husband, etc. She said she's been like this "for a few years." She decided to talk to her ob/gyn about it, and the doctor prescribed Lexapro for her to try. "Sally" had been on an antidepressant some years ago when she was having difficulty at a job, and she said it seemed to help her.

Well, her husband (a fundy who used to write hateful letters bashing homosexuals, for instance, to our local paper (when they still lived in our hometown)), got her all freaked out about trying the medication. He started reading up about all the side effects of stopping cold turkey, etc.

I emailed her back and tried to be really supportive. I told her that you should take the medication while under a doctor's care, and if you were to go off of it, you would be withdrawn from it gradually (I've been on several SSRIs in the past, which is why she wrote me to begin with). I also told her that talk therapy in addition to medication is key. I said that once you're feeling better, the rest will fall into place.

I didn't hear from her for a few days.

I emailed her today to see how she was doing. I suspected her husband was going to convince her that only "crazy people" take antidepressants and that if she only goes to church and relies on him, she'll be fine. Boy, did I nail it on the head.

He told her that "there's nothing going on now that is causing you stress." In other words, it's all in your mind. She said she realized she didn't need medication when she lost a parent, and that it was through the love of her husband and being involved in her church that got her through.

I emailed her back, "Good luck."

I have taken every drug and its brother, I think. When I was going through some particularly bad flashbacks and PTSD, I started taking SSRI's. I took several different ones for years. They may work for some people, but they made me blah. I was no longer depressed or having trouble sleeping, I just had no emotions. Trying to wean myself off of these drugs was a nightmare, so sayeth the woman who weaned herself off of high doses of Morphine. They are a very insidious group of drugs. They can cause heart issues, weight gain, high blood pressure, etc. Of course,  I would never take the advice of some goofy DU person to help me decide what meds to take. The best thing for the woman if she is having a short term problem would be to take something like xanax, even though it can be addictive, but they work best as a short term drug, and are more effective. Of course, that might make some sense, so I am sure it's just this chick's fundy racist hubby. You know how controlling those fundy men are! He probably drags her around the house by her hair, or sumthin'. :mental:

A politician who portrays himself as caring and sensitive because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he is willing to do good with other people's money. I found this bonfire interesting, because it can be classified three different ways:

(01) as a bouncy;
(02) as a stretchy; and
(03) as a zulu.

That rarely happens.

Frank, which one is the one where a reich-winger is converted? I forget what all the subtleties are there.

 This is seriously OT, but did you guys hear the CEO of Freddie Mac committed suicide? He was only 41. They found him at 5 this morning. Something big coming out of this? HMmmm.

The zulu was invented by a certain primitive, the "zuluzucchini" or "zucchinizulu" primitive, I forget which variation, who has a history of writing possibly-true tales of encountering a "freeper," and the "freeper" bests him.

Thanks, Frank! IIRC, The "Bouncy" was named for the teacher? who went by the name of Mrs. Bouncy. She was always having acrimonious events with fundies and freepers, and cops coming out of the bushes, right? One of the great things about this site is the creative naming of the primatives on the island. I find myself naming them in my head. Other than just the obvious names like DUmbass, I mean. :-)

Yeah, it was a teacher, or a teacher's aide, or a janitress, in a school down in Texas who popularized the bouncy; she didn't invent the genre, but she made it famous.

Her official primitive screen-name was "BouncyBall" or "BouncingBall," I forget which, and she isn't seen any more on Skins's island.

Rebaptizing the primitives is necessary, because much of the time, the primitives choose really stupid screen-names, just really stupid screen-names, and it's important for primitive-identification so that one can keep them straight, to give them more-appropriate screen-names.

Oh yeah, Bouncy Ball. I think it was her posts, along with TinT that got me into lurking over here. I used to read FireDogLake to find out what was going on in LeftyLand, but those militant lesbians just freaked/bummed me out too much.
They are showing the CFO from Freddie Mac's house on Fox right now. I find it so odd he committed suicide. Maybe I am turning into a troofer, but the timing? Just doesn't feel right.

There needs to be something for one like this where a story is contrived to illustrate how horrible a large group (Christians in this one) are.

My wife observed that he probably was going to be indicted--that's why he did it.
