(UPI) - A two-day conference in Los Angeles for the wives of African presidents is to focus on health, especially the fight against AIDS, and women's issues.

At least 12 first ladies are committed to the summit, CNN reported. They are the wives of heads of state in Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Swaziland, and Zambia.

The sponsors are U.S. Doctors for Africa and African Synergy Against AIDS and Suffering, a group initiated by African first ladies. The conference begins Monday.

"Empowering Africa's first ladies is an innovative approach to bettering the lives of millions of Africans," Ted Alemayhu, who heads the doctors group, said in a written statement. "The summit will pair these leaders with U.S. experts, key political figures and important organizations to create ongoing partnerships."

Maria Shriver, wife of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, is expected to give opening remarks, the sponsors said, and a contingent of celebrities, including Diane Lane and Sharon Stone, plan to attend.

First of all, why is Michelle Obama getting involved with this ?? Is she "African"?? I hope not. Secondly, why is it strictly the US' task to conquer AIDS, which STARTED in Africa??

It won't come to anything.

There's a world of difference between those countries listed.

I think somebody is being racist, lumping all those African countries together as if they're all the same sort of thing.

...uh....may I ask who's footing the bill for this?
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Yeah, right, as if we don't know.

It still freaks me, though, the racism in this organization.

There's a wide divergence in culture, language, economics, and politics in all these African countries listed--about as much difference as between Paraguay and Laos.

I suspect that whoever set this up had the standard usual customary automatic attitude of Democrats, liberals, and primitives--"Well, they all got black skin, so they must all be alike."

I'll give a pass on this one.   If President Bush was still in office, Laura would be doing the same thing as 'chelle is doing, but with more class and grace. I'm willing to bet though, that the fact that AIDS funding to Africa increased massively under GW will be ignored.
