Another Pleasant CC Sunday...
« on: April 19, 2009, 07:32:06 AM »
Back from the flatlands of Kansas (okay, it wasn't THAT flat, but close) and home to my ball-shrinking cold NH.

Apparently it was nice on Friday, but someone wasn't HERE for that, and got to see 50 and rain yesterday.  Sunny but cold here this morning--down to 35.  Might get up to 53, but down to 28 tonight.

I did find that the lounge chairs I've been looking for at Cabela's are again half-off, but when I went to order them online, the shipping charges for "large items" made it painfully apparent I'd be better off DRIVING to the one in Scarbourough, Maine (about an hour away) and paying the sales tax to get them.  At least it gets me out of the house.

Following said trip and purchase, critters will be sacrificed on the altar of the BBQ.  Beer will be consumed.  That is all.

Thanks.  You picked my favorite Monkees song.  So cynical.  So condescending.  So misunderstood by the teenybopping public at the time.  I loved it!

But since then, Sunday will never be the same.

Hence the reason I actually have a few Monkees songs on the iPod.  Amazing how people then didn't "get" the message in Pleasant Valley Sunday...

Okay, off to Maine.  God help me.

It's raining and I'm off to do 4 drive by shootings.... :-)
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

Would you pick me up two packages of frozen broccoli and two cans of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup so I won't have to get out?  My wife is making a casserole for a church potluck.

No activities today, woohoo!  That mean all the kids are home for a change.  Which mean i have 3 little kiddos for slave work to get the house  and yard whipped into shape for the week!

Supposed to rain later, and the highs of 77 yesterday are long gone, dropping down to 44 tomorrow.  Crud.

It's almost 1400 and I have yet to go outside or leave the house.

I am taking "day of rest" pretty seriously today!  :evillaugh:

Had to go to the library at UNT to pick up a bunch of books for my final history paper.

Not that I'm going to actually work on it today. I'm just going to relax and watch TV, do a load of laundry and finish up the left over six pack from last night.

Did about 5 hours of studying today for a final lab practical exam, and ordered another textbook online... Don't take college bookstores seriously when they say you don't save much by shopping online... they try to ignore the fact that most students try to purchase used textbooks that are in good condition, rather than brand new.  Talk about misleading, as the bookstore only compares their textbook prices to what a brand-new book would cost online.  They completely remove used books from the equation.  :whatever:

I ordered a science textbook and just picked it up yesterday... I only paid HALF of what the bookstore wanted, and the book is in perfect condition on the inside, with a few scratches on the front cover.  Ordered the Pre-Calc textbook today, and saved about half with that one too (with a bookseller I've done business with before).

You can save even more if you're willing to purchase the 'Chinese' copies.   :uhsure:

I had a friend order a cellphone from Hong Kong once, no thanks!   :o :lmao:

Here is my college bookstores lovely display of insecurity about online textbooks.

AASU is FULL OF IT!

The fact that they completely ignore the idea of most students purchasing gently used textbooks at a fraction of the cost is  :mental:

I've honestly only once had a problem ordering from overseas.  Actually, twice I should say, since I just had an incident that I'm a bit befuddled by.  Of course, fraud does certainly exist.

:lmao:  You'd think that a college book store sponsored study, would be a bit less obviously biased.  :rotf:  It's pretty much darn foolish to even walk into those dens of thieves.  Or question the integrity of students, whom pay out of pocket, choosing the $25 Tiawanese book over the $230 legal book.

College bookstores are insane. I have to get my Physics textbook for summer, and to buy it at the store is $198. But I can get it from Amazon for less than $30... Hmm, wonder which one I'm going for... :thatsright:

Add in that, since you're buying it for the summer semester.  It'll likely have zero trade in value come the fall term.  As, the new school year will have introduced an updated version which has essentially no updates but will be required to pass the course.   :thatsright:

Yup. My mom is the bookstore manager for one of the campuses of the community college in Athens, and she's often shaking her head at what they have to do. I don't mind because I'm getting most of my books for free...

Our bookstore, aside from buying books back itself, also brings in an outsider company to purchase back textbooks. They'll even take older editions.  I've gotten about 60-65% back by selling my books to this company instead of the bookstore (less than 50%).  :cheersmate:

Just returned from Kansas City, where our brass ensemble played two church services in a large (3,000 members) Methodist church. The gig went well, but the best part was meeting some really great folks from that church - Mrs E, myself, and two of the guys stayed in the home of a married couple who was simply delightful, gracious, and generous.

Reminded me of days gone past when staying in the home of complete strangers in Germany was something we often did.

Thanks debk and Gratiot but most if not all of the credit should go to him and his mother.
