Deadliest Warrior?
« on: April 18, 2009, 05:44:36 PM »
Anyone watch this show?  Just watched the Viking Vs Samurai episode on the internet.  I personally feel that they didn't look at a lot of factors to include between the two.  They mostly just looked at weapons.  Not styles of training, and the like.  But in the end the computer that they used to decide the winner made the right choice in my opinion.

A pretty good show.  I'll be watching the next episode this Tuesday.  Spartan vs Ninja.

No, it does sound like a stupid match-up, though.  Not even as close together temporally as a Civil War rifleman vs. a fusilier from the Thirty Years War, the weapons and armor would be wildly mismatched.

I don't think they care much about temporality, though they did make a small point of level of technology, in the make up of their weapons.  The bladed Samurai swords where much more advanced then the bladed Viking weapons.

I watched Gladiator v Apache, the Indian kicked butt - mainly due to long range weapon (bow&arrow against the Roman's sling).  Technically speaking the sling accounted for 1 computer kill where the bow racked up hundreds. I think if they kept it to medium/ short range the Gladiator would have prevailed significantly more then the Apache.

Probably.  While war was a way of life to most Plains Indians, war WAS life for the Gladiators.

Whom did the algorithm state as coming out ahead?

I'll admit, I actually read that thesis paper on the topic, which was floating around the net a few years ago.  Now that's scholarly research  :cheersmate:

Yup, watched two episodes so far. Not toooooooooo bad, but man, they get some asshole experts on there. I wanted to kick the Apache dude's ass just for being a bitchy ****. Then the samurai guy was a tad lispy...

BUT- pretty cool just to see the effects of the various weapons.

Let's not be dissin' the Samurais..........

But........ I think the Viking would have won. Once again, it went to the use of a bow. No way would I have been caught like that Viking was.

Gave it to the Samurai.  Though not by a large margin.  In a 1000 simulated battles, the Samurai won 522 of them.

Like the spear thing?  How hard would it have been to duck, or roll out of the way?  They made such a huge deal out of deflecting both.  They never considered just stepping out of the way.

The way they rated the weapons was messed up as well.  They used a Pole Axe for the viking short range weapon, and a longsword for their mid range weapon?  WTF?  And then said that the longsword was a better weapon then the Naginata?  That baffled me.  Every time he struck with the longsword his motion stopped.  Sure, he nearly decapitated the dummie with it, but his momentum came to a screaming halt when he did that.  The Naginata sliced cleanly through the dummies skull, brain and all, and he used the momentum from the strike to continue on with others.  One weapons keeps you flat footed and unable to move, the other enhances your speed and keeps you mobile so you can avoid random strikes on the battlefield.

How the Naginata didn't beat the Long Sword baffled me.  Not that they should have been paired up at all in the first place.

I'll see if I can find that report on it.  In it, it went to the knight, however it was only to knights of certain eras.

Somebody did a study of Scottish swords to Japanese samurai swords.  The results of the study were that the later Scottish swords were superior weapons compared to their contemporary Japanese samurai swords.  The reason for this is that the Europeans favored innovation while the Japanese favored strict tradition.

I've always liked to try and compare knights to samurai.  The equipment of the knights would give them a distinct edge.  Knights using shields would give the samuraies fits.

Saw the Ninja vs Spartan episode...interesting...and it sounded to me like the narator was the same actor that did the naration for the movie "300".

Next week? Pirate vs Knight...personally I would have loved to see Pirate vs Ninja to settle the age old question.  :-)

I missed it last night, but they have it on TV already, so I'm watching it now.  Honestly, in a 1 on 1 I see the Ninja coming out on top.  There is a big differance between taking someone whose whole style of fighting was for the most part dependant on having a man to his left and right, and someone who trained to attack from the shadows and melt back into them.

I saw the viking/samurai. My thinking is that it's a tough call.

However, if Japan were in the range of the Viking longboats, history would have been different.

It was a real eye-opener to see the katana be virtually useless against Viking chain mail. From what I have learned, there weren't many katana thrust techniques, probably due to the body makeup of the average Japanese warrior. Also, I don't know how effective that Yuba bow would have been against a Viking shield wall. And that Japanese sword-breaker club (forget the name) was a pretty impressive weapon.

Yeah, I meant they have it on the internet.  I don't know if you can watch past episodes, but they seem to put the latest one up to watch.

That commercial is going to get annoying as shit, but about 30 seconds into it you can click on a button to skip the rest of it.

And BTW, the Gladiator vs Apache episode is on tonight.

I've seen a similar study, which quite honestly shocked me.  Additionally, it revealed that a Samurai's katana would essentially be destroyed, an a futile attempt of getting through a knights armor.  Where as a Knight's sword would easily break through a Samurai's armor.
