Alchohol Trivia
« on: April 18, 2009, 12:39:20 AM »
Each molecule of alcohol is less than a billionth of a meter long and consists of a few atoms of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen.

Montana became the first state to repeal its enforcement of Prohibition, doing so in 1926 (Prohibition lasted from 1920 through 1933).

The shallow champagne glass originated with Marie Antoinette. It was first formed from wax molds made of her breasts.

Martha Washington enjoyed daily toddys. In the 1790s, "happy hour" began at 3:00 p.m. and cocktails continued until dinner.

The bill for a celebration party for the 55 drafters of the US Constitution was for 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, 8 bottles of whiskey, 22 bottles of port, 8 bottles of hard cider, 12 beers and seven bowls of alcohol punch large enough that "ducks could swim in them."

The Manhattan cocktail (whiskey and sweet vermouth) was invented by Winston Churchill's mother.

In the 1600's thermometers were filled with brandy instead of mercury.

"There's no free lunch." Pennsylvania outlawed free lunches in 1917 to prevent taverns from giving free sandwiches to customers who bought beer to drink with them. This led some shop keepers to sell sandwiches and give away the beer.

The noble and feared Aztec warrior Dakkijja was known for getting plastered everyday.  Dakkijja would never drop his spear, even when passed out drunk under a banana tree.  This unusual trait came to be known as the Dakk Carry.  A drink was named after him.

Before Prohibition, Shlitz Brewery owned more property in Chicago than anyone else, except the Catholic church.

In the 1800's liquor was a Beautician's secret!  Yes, rum was considered an excellent product for cleaning hair and keeping it healthy, and brandy was believed to strengthen the hair roots

The term for an abnormal or insatiable craving for alcohol is "dipsomania".

The United States of America's national anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner," was written to the tune of a drinking song.

The sentence "Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs" is the same as what typesetters use to include all the letters of the alphabet in one sentence.  But our proper English tutors changed it to "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" while teaching typing.

Giving my dad a couple of beers turns ME into an asshole. I've considered having shirts made...

I suspect all it does is lower his inhibitions and allows him to speak the truth freely.   :innocent:

Whiskey was invented to keep the Irish from taking over the world.
