Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych found dead
« on: April 13, 2009, 05:04:16 PM »
"BOSTON -- Former All-Star pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych has been found dead in an apparent accident at his farm in Northborough, Massachusetts. He was 54.

Worcester County district attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. says a family friend found Fidrych (right, from Associated Press) about 2:30 p.m. Monday beneath a pickup truck. He appeared to be working on the truck, Early said.

The colorful right-hander was the American League rookie of the year in 1976 (here's an account of that season from espn.com) when he went 19-9 with a 2.34 earned run average. He spent all five of his major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, compiling a 29-19 record and a 3.10 ERA.

His career was cut short by injuries." Link

Just another reminder to always use jack stands when grease monkeying around under the truck.

Actually jackstands wouldn't have helped in this situation he was killed because a piece of his clothing got caught in something and it sucked him into the either the engine or trans and suffocated him!

Ah man, for someone who rarely watches baseball anymore,  Fidrych (along with Greg Maddox) was my favorite pitcher.  I can still see the guy on the mound at Tiger Stadium.  He'd strike someone out and the catcher would throw to first who then threw to second on around to third, and Fidrych would follow the ball while walking around the mound holding up his glove with this anxious kid look of "Throw the ball to me, guys.  Com'n, throw it to me."  It was great.

That's what I read yesterday. He was strangled after his shirt was wrung up in the power take-off shaft of the dump truck.
