What if they were to secretly swim in and attach a rope to the lifeboat from one of the ships?
And maybe just slowly haul them in a little closer. With that kind of control it might reduce it entirely to a waiting game.

Real life tends to be messier. For one thing, the rope would have to be attached underwater and not show above water during the pulling. That might not be possible.
That...and the sense of movement and the wake and maybe, "Hey, Achmed, is that warship getting closer? Quick! Kill the American!"
