"Fall Weekend" will be taking the place of the holiday formerly known as "Columbus Day" at Brown University this fall.

The faculty of the Ivy League university voted at a meeting Tuesday to establish a new academic and administrative holiday in October called "Fall Weekend" that coincides with Columbus Day, but that doesn't bear the name of the explorer.

Hundreds of Brown students had asked the Providence, R.I. school to stop observing Columbus Day, saying Christopher Columbus's violent treatment of Native Americans he encountered was inconsistent with Brown's values.

"I'm very pleased," Reiko Koyama, a sophomore who led the effort, told the student newspaper, the Brown Daily Herald. "It's been a long time coming."

The change will take effect this fall.

This is such a radical posuer hippie thing to do.  If they really had the courage of their convictions they would give the land the university is on back to the tribes who originally occupied the area and head back to whatever country their ancestors came from.

At the very least they should give up that extra day off, and devote their time to charities benefiting native Americans.

Being of Norwegian decent we NEVER honored Chris Columbine.

The vikings discovered NORTH AMERICA almost ""500"" years BEFORE Chris Columbine was even a twinkle in his daddy's eye.

And to be historically accurate, Chris Columbine NEVER found NORTH AMERICA, he found the Caribbien[sic] islands.

Until Brown University changes its name - you know, so that it's no longer named after its slave-trading founder - it lacks the moral authority to pass judgment upon the supposedly similar actions of others.

They can call it Betty Boop's Weekend Booty Festival if they want, but the truth is Columbus Day is a federal holiday, it will stay a federal holiday, banks and post offices will be closed, and Brown University will not be holding classes.  Sounds like a celebration to me.
